Popular entertainment reporter Peter Ford has responded to published claims today that he is allegedly being considered to replace veteran star Richard Wilkins on Nine’s Today Show.
Following high profile lineup changes on the long running breakfast program, speculation continues to mount about the show’s 2019 lineup.
Amid claims by an anonymous source, published today by the Daily Mail, that Ford is being lined up to sit in Dicky’s chair, the well-connected gossip guru took to Twitter.
‘I’m sure they want someone young and gorgeous so I wouldn’t be putting money on me!’ quipped Ford, notably without denying the story, or clarifying whether he was in negotiations. ‘But as I rapidly approach 90 it’s nice to speculated about.’
Ford, who is regularly seen on Channel 7 and heard around Australia and New Zealand on radio, suggested he wasn’t entirely enjoying the scrutiny.
‘It’s fun to be written about in the paper but dilemma I now have is do I dare look at the reader comments? My fragile self-esteem says “don’t dare” but curiosity has always been my driving force,’ he tweeted.
Nine earlier this week told the Sydney Morning Herald in response to speculation about Wilkins’ future: ‘Richard is a valued member of the Nine and Today family. He will remain with Today in 2019 and beyond.’
Suggesting some insider knowledge of the situation at Today, Ford tweeted in response, indicating that Wilkins was indeed going to have a change of role in the New Year.
‘I think the plan is for Richard to focus primarily on Today Extra next year so what they say is true he’s still part of the Today family,’ he claimed.
Nine has yet to comment on the ongoing speculation.
