What is the Barbie movie about?
Margot Robbie’s Barbie life was a dream come true until her perfect existence took an unexpected turn. Suddenly, she finds herself enduring icy showers, stumbling off rooftops, and the ultimate horror—her high heels making contact with the ground.
Kate McKinnon’s character revealed the truth to Barbie while brandishing a stiletto and a Birkenstock. “You have a choice,” she explained, “return to your ordinary life or embrace the profound secrets of the universe”.
However, Barbie soon discovered that her choice was an illusion. With no alternative, she and Ryan Gosling’s Ken bid farewell to the comforts of Barbie Land and embarked on an adventure into the harsh reality of the real world.
As anticipated, the real world proved far from ideal. Barbie’s encounter with an offensive man leads to her retaliating with a swift punch, resulting in her and Ken landing in jail.
Adding to her troubles, Will Ferrell’s character insists on concealing her presence in the real world. According to him, if the truth were to be exposed, the consequences would be utterly catastrophic.
Will Ferrell shared some insight into the film via The Wall Street Journal.
“It is, in my humble opinion, the ultimate example of high art and low art,” the former Saturday Night Live star told the publication. “It’s a loving homage to the brand and, at the same time, couldn’t be more satirical. Just an amazing comment on male patriarchy and women in society and why Barbie’s criticised and yet why every little girl still wants to play with Barbie.”
Greta Gerwig is co-writer and director along with Noah Baumbach. Margot Robbie, her husband Tom Ackerley and Mattel’s Robbie Brenner and David Heyman also produced.
Who is Greta Gerwig?
Greta Gerwig is an American director, actress and screenwriter.
Her big debut as a solo writer and director was Lady Bird in 2017, starring Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet. She received Academy Award nominations for both her direction and the screenplay.
The 40-year-old went on to direct the highly successful remake of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, Little Women – again starring Saoirse and Timothée, along with Florence Pugh, Emma Watson and Eliza Scanlen.
Now, the Barbie film is one of her biggest hits.
