It is undeniable that Barbie was *the* movie of 2023. Not only did it achieve an amazing global success of $1.34 billion at the box office, but its phenomenal cultural impact saw the market flooded with Barbie collabs.
The movie itself was basically perfect. It had everything audiences wanted, childhood Barbie nostalgia, a solid feminist spin, an amazing all-star cast and Ryan Gosling giving the role of Ken his all – which is why almost as soon as the movie premiered, fans were curious about the possibility of a sequel.
Will there be a Barbie Movie Sequel?
Now, Margot Robbie, who played the titular character has shared her thoughts on the possibility of a follow-up movie in an interview with The Associated Press.
“I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something,” said Robbie.
“Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
In a world where many films are either sequels, reboots or remakes, Margot also noted in her new interview that Barbie is proof that “original films can still hit huge.”
“It doesn’t have to be a sequel or a prequel or a remake,” she continued. “It can be totally original. It can still be big given the big budget to do that. And just because there’s a female lead doesn’t mean it’s not going to hit all four quadrants which is, you know, I think a misconception that a lot of people still have.”
Margot also added that she hopes Barbie’s success will allow future filmmakers to “have big original ideas and be given the budget to execute them properly.”
Although it doesn’t appear likely that fans will get a Barbie 2 (yet), we can expect a number of similar nostalgic-driven live-action films in the near future.
Barbie marked just one of the many films Mattel have in the works, with 45 films reportedly planned to bring your favourite childhood toys to the big screen.
Lena Dunham is set to write and direct an upcoming Polly Pocket movie with Mattel, with Emily in Paris lead, Lilly Collins attached to the titular role.
“As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pocket, this is a real dream come true and I can’t wait to bring these tiny toys to the big screen,” Lily told Variety in 2021.
Magic Ball 8, American Girl, Barney, and Hot Wheels toy-to-film adaptions are also currently in the works.
