“Bridget is back and is about to take over London. Filming is being mapped out already and all of the pre-production is in place,” a source previously told the Daily Mail.
“There was some uncertainty about whether it would get off the ground, but the movie is coming. Renée is excited about bringing Bridget back. She adores the character so much. Bridget Jones fever is expected to sweep across London this spring.”
The publication also revealed the new instalment would be based on Helen's 2013 novel, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, and would focus on Bridget as a 51-year-old single mum navigating the modern dating landscape.
Revealing further plot details, The Guardian also reported that the newest instalment would be set four years after the events of Bridget Jones' Baby and would see Bridget grappling with grief and motherhood after Mark had been killed by a landmine in Sudan, however, this storyline has yet to be confirmed.
The news of a new film doesn't come as a complete surprise to fans, as Renée had previously made comments on continuing the franchise back in 2019.
During an appearance on The Talk, she confirmed that she'd be interested in starring as Bridget Jones once again."Bridget Jones: The Menopause," Renée joked. "No, I know Helen's [Fielding] written the book, and I love this character. So, I mean, if they call me, I'll go running."
In 2020, Renée told Vanity Fair when asked whether there would be another instalment of the hit franchise, “It would be fun, yeah. I know people are coy. I’m not. I promise I’m not. I just don’t know."
“I mean, that’s a Helen [Fielding, the author] question, but I hope she would want to…I’m always the last to know. They’re already building sets, and they call me and say, ‘What do you think?’ It’s fun. It’s so much fun. Man, I’d love the experience of revisiting her. I love her. I just think she’s so much fun. She’s the best. Sure, if I got invited to do that, that sounds like fun.”
The Bridget Jones Trilogy is currently available to stream on Binge, Stan and Paramount+. You can also catch up on all your spoilers by reading Helen Fielding's books, which you can find here.
