She was a favourite on Nick Cummins’ season of The Bachelor, but Brooke Blurton hasn’t ruled out being Australia’s first openly bisexual Bachelorette.
In a chat with Matty J and Ruby Teys on The Babble podcast, host Matty asked the season six star if a discussion had occurred earlier in the year about her taking on the role.
“Look, there was no offer made, but I wouldn’t say that I’m not open to it.” Brooke replied.
“There was kind of talk and speculation about certain things, and recently on a podcast, they were saying that I had to grow my followers in order to be the Bachelorette, but I don’t think that was necessarily the case,” she added.
“I don’t know, I’d be very open to it. I’m a little bit different in the sense that I date both sexes and whether Channel Ten and Warner Brothers would be up to a sort-of bi Bachelorette, I don’t know what they would that look like or if Australia would be ready for that.
“My followers have definitely been very vocal about their needs – they want a person of colour or a woman of colour to be in those positions.”
Brooke, who also starred on season two of Bachelor in Paradise, added that aside from Georgia Love, the past Aussie Bachelorettes have been “stereotypically white and blonde” and that mixing up the formula could in fact lead to a boost in ratings.
“I think they [producers] need to be a little more risk taking in that sense. It’s just having someone who had a different nationality, it’s not really that risky.”
Following the announcement that Elly and Becky Miles would be the 2020 double Bachelorettes, former Bachelor contestant Abbie Chatfield confessed she’d had her fingers crossed for Brooke.
“I was hoping it would be Brooke Blurton, she seemed like a good choice for racial diversity and also representing the LGBTQIA+ community, and she’s great,” Abbie exclusively told Who.
Bachelor in Paradise’s Mary Viturino also slammed The Bachelorette, writing on Instagram: “I was hoping Bachelorette would have listened to the Australian public – who have been asking for more diversity. Especially when there are some boss Indigenous past contestants like Brooke Blurton and Renee Barrett to choose from.”
Despite Brooke’s openness to becoming the Bachelorette, she told Who in 2019 that she wouldn’t recommend every woman to apply for The Bachelor.
“I really enjoyed my experiences. I can see the challenges and definitely the really unethical ways of treating people,” she explained in a previous chat with Who.
“And I would say if you’re not really set on who you are and what character you’ve been picked for, it’ll be a very uneasy ride for you. I spend most of my time talking girls out of it rather than into it.”
We may have to wait a little longer for Brooke to potentially score the Bachelorette gig, but in the meantime she’s been keeping busy with her new sports correspondent role on NITV.
The proud Noongar Yamatji woman scored her dream gig hosting Western Australian NRL’s Indigenous Round in August and shared the news with her followers on Instagram.
“’If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got,'” Brooke quoted from Henry Ford.
“Stepping out of my comfort zone is something I try to always live my life by. This role has already taught me so much about myself in the 5 weeks and I’m extremely excited for more growth, more NRL and more bloopers.”
