Did Ellie Goulding actually date the world’s most famous red head? No, not Prince Harry (although they reportedly did date). We’re talking about Ed Sheeran!
Fans of the two pop stars have many questions about the nature of Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding’s relationship, and whether the pair were actually an item. So, let’s discuss:
Were Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding in a relationship?
The story (or rumour) goes, British singers Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding were introduced by mutual friend and fellow pop star Taylor Swift.
At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards held on August 25, the pair were seen holding hands in the crowd, but Ellie tried to convince everyone they were just friends.
“I love that holding hands with my friends means we’re an item,” she tweeted. “In that case I am in many relationships. Lover not a hater.”
However, Ed went against Ellie’s claims and confirmed that they were dating when the photo was taken.
“I mean, normal people don’t hold hands if they’re just friends,” he said in a September interview with Washington radio station Click 98.9 “It was going on. And now it’s not.”
How long did Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding date for?
If they did date, it doesn’t seem like it was for long. As the MTV awards were in August and Ed confirmed that ‘it wasn’t going on’ anymore in September. Short but sweet?
Why did their relationship end? Did Ellie Goulding cheat on Ed Sheeran?
Now, why did Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding break up? Well… Some think it’s because Ellie cheated on Ed Sheeran with former One Direction band member now solo singer Niall Horan. This is where the drama starts.
Fans think there was overlap between Ed and Ellie and Ellie and Niall because of the lyrics in Ed’s hit song ‘Don’t’. (More about this below).
Ellie has in fact confirmed that she and Niall did date. “I did go on a few dates with Niall, but I was never in a relationship with Ed,” she told Elle UK in 2015. “I have absolutely no idea where that came from and why it was turned into such a big thing.”

Ed Sheeran songs written about Ellie Goulding
So what is the meaning behind Ed Sheeran’s song ‘Don’t?’. Is it really about Ellie Goulding and Niall Horan?
Well, firstly, Ed did confirm that the story in the song is true.
“The story in “Don’t” is 100 percent true. I could have gotten nastier — there was more sh*t that I didn’t put in,” he told Billboard.
“I was seeing someone for a bit of time, and then they ended up physically involved with one of my friends in the same hotel that we were staying in, while I was downstairs. And I feel like: Treat people how you want to be treated.”
Fans think it may be about Ellie because the lyrics suggest the girl Ed sings about is a fellow music artist: “Me and her we make money the same way / Four cities, two planes, the same day”.
Another damning line: “She was only looking for a lover to burn,” because ‘Burn’ is one of Ellie’s biggest hits.

After Don’t was released, Ellie’s dropped her song ‘On My Mind’, which many thought to be a response to Ed.
With lyrics like, “Next thing that I know, I’m in a hotel with you / You were talking deep like it was mad love to you/ You wanted my heart, but I just liked your tattoos,” you can see why fans would think that.
However, Ellie shut the rumours down. “I’m sorry to all the people that want it to be about someone — it’s not, it’s like a myth,” she said. “I like guys with tattoos, my boyfriend has tattoos…but I don’t mind. People can read into it however they want. It’s fun to do that, I would do that too.”
Team Ed or Team Ellie?
We’re going to remain neutral on this one. We like both of their music way too much to pick a side!
Besides, Ed is happily married and Ellie is engaged to Caspar Jopling.
