Ariel Winter has been emancipated from her mother since 2015, but their years-long family drama appears to still be a sore subject between the mother and daughter.
The Modern Family star’s mother, Chrisoula Workman, told her side of the custody battle and criticised her daughter’s wardrobe in a recent interview with InTouch Weekly.
“She needs to grow up. I would tell her to dress properly, be the beautiful person she is. I feel sad that she feels the need to expose herself when it’s not necessary,” Workman said in the interview, released Wednesday. “Ariel is smart, beautiful and talented. She is a legitimate actress. She does not need to do this. She is beautiful with her clothes on.”
Winter did not mention her mother by name, but took to Twitter later Wednesday afternoon to express frustration about the comments.
“What’s sad is that you lie consistently,” Winter, 19, tweeted. “Also, why is it that you only choose to talk to me through the press? I’m doing just fine. Toxic.”
Winter’s sister, Shanelle Gray, became the actress’ guardian in 2012 after the Department of Children and Family Services found evidence of her mother emotionally abusing Ariel.
Winter announced she had officially become an emancipated minor in May 2015, ending years of custody drama.
“I’ve kind of been in adulthood for a little bit now,” Winter told PEOPLE in early 2016. “I have a great support system now.”
