Since hard-launching their romance in her Please, Please, Please music video, Barry Keoghan and his girlfriend Sabrina Carpenter have dominated the internet as one of the hottest new it-couples, but now, the pair have reportedly put their relationship on ice.
According to People, Barry and Sabrina decided to hit pause on their romance to focus more time on their growing careers, with sources telling the publication, “They are both young and career-focused, so they’ve decided to take a break.”
While Sabrina has yet to comment on the speculation, one week after news of their alleged split made headlines, Barry took to X to share a statement shortly after deactivating his Instagram account.
“I can only sit and take so much. My name has been dragged across the internet in ways I usually don’t respond to,” he wrote, adding, “I have to respond now because it’s getting to a place where too many lines [are] being crossed.”
“The messages I have received no person should ever have to read them. Absolute lies, hatred, disgusting commentary about my appearance, character, how I am as a parent and every other inhumane thing you can imagine.”
“I want [my son, Brando] to be able to look up to his daddy, to have full trust in me and know I will have his back no matter what. I need you to remember he has to read ALL of this about his father when he is older. Please be respectful to all.”
Although the pair have yet to officially confirm or deny the split rumours, fans across the globe have taken to social media to look back at the timeline of their romance.
Did Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan break up?
While Barry and Sabrina have yet to speak publicly on their relationship, rumours surrounding their split had been circulating for several months before People’s insider confirmation.
Speculation first surfaced in September 2024 after celebrity gossip site DeuxMoi shared a deep dive into their break-up rumours – claiming the pair split around August 16.
Despite the news breaking the hearts of Barry and Sabrina fans worldwide, it appeared that Barry seemingly quashed rumours of their split after liking Sabrina’s Instagram photo of her Short n’ Sweet LP cover, with many fans taking the like as confirmation the pair were at least still on good terms.
So what prompted the split rumours? According to The Sun, Sabrina had allegedly become fed up with the 31-year-old actor’s “hard-partying” lifestyle, with sources claiming, ‘’Barry acts like an idiot when he is drunk and Sabrina was getting increasingly frustrated. He has always been a party animal and Sabrina was fed up with his antics.’’
As the rumour mill eventually began to slow down, DeuxMoi shared an insider tip in November claiming that Barry had been spotted with another girl on a night out.
“This A-list singer who’s having her breakout year and her foreign actor boyfriend are done for good. On the closing night of her biggest tour date in LA, he was busy getting cozy at San Vincente Bungalows with a blonde, semi-famous LA-based influencer,” the source claimed.
While we still don’t know yet if there’s any actual truth to these rumours, we’ll be sure to keep you posted on any new developments.
When did Barry Keoghan and Sabrina Carpenter start dating?
After months of speculation dating back to late 2023, Barry and Sabrina sent the internet into overdrive after the pair seemingly made their first joint appearance at the Gucci Grammy Awards afterparty in February 2024.
Since then, they’ve also appeared together at high-profile events including the 2024 Met Gala and side stage at the world-renowned Coachella Festival.
Following the release of her hit album Short n’ Sweet in August 2024, Barry was quickly spotted watching his girlfriend at many live performances, with the song Bed Chem, which Barry said was his favourite, being widely speculated to be about the Saltburn star.
Later that month, Sabrina made some rare comments about her new beau in an interview with Variety, sharing that his casting in her Please, Please, Please music video was only natural, given that he “loved” the song.
“He’s obsessed with the lyrics, and I’m so grateful for that. I don’t want to sound biased, but I think he’s one of the best actors of this generation, so getting to see him on the screen with my song as the soundtrack made the video better and all the more special.”
When asked about their relationship on The Louis Theroux Podcast shortly after the album dropped, Barry shared an equally short but sweet statement, saying, “I’m incredibly blessed. [Sabrina is] such a strong, independent lady who’s massively talented and yeah. Pretty special.”
How did Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan meet?
While we don’t know *exactly* when Barry and Sabrina first crossed paths, the pair were first spotted together in December 2023, with the Daily Mail reporting that the duo were enjoying a romantic dinner together.
After the initial photos of the pair together made headlines, Sabrina and Barry’s romance seemingly disappeared from the public eye.
Despite keeping their rumoured relationship under wraps, they were photographed together for the first time during Grammy’s Week in February 2024, and the following week, seemed to make their romance official at the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscars Party.
Does Barry Keoghan have a child?
Yes, in June 2022, Barry and his ex-wife Alyson Kierrnas confirmed they were expecting their first child together – announcing they welcomed their son Brando in August.
“It’s indescribable,” Barry explained of the birth of his son to GQ in October 2022. “It’s a love I’ve not felt before.”
After winning a BAFTA for his supporting role in The Banshees of Inisherin, Barry dedicated the award to his son.
“Brando. I just want this for my son as well, Brando,” he told the crowd. “[And] for my mother and also for the kids that are dreaming to be something from the area that I came from. This is for yous [sic].”
Usually quite private about his son Brando, Barry clapped back at the negativity surrounding his parenting style.
While speaking on The Louis Theroux Podcast he said, “Of course, it’s going to affect me being a father when I had no blueprint to take from.”
Having had no relationship with his own father, Barry was raised by his mother, who struggled with addiction and passed away from a heroin overdose when he was 12. He spent time in foster care living in 13 different homes.
“People just read that [as] laziness and go, ‘Oh, that’s no excuse to be an absent father,’ but I am not an absent father,” he continued.
Barry noted that his increasing fame has led to more criticism and deters him from being open about his son, adding, “I don’t think it’s fair to put my child online. There are sick people out there.”
“Because I reigned that in, people draw a narrative and go, ‘Absent father, s**t, deadbeat dad,’ and more disgusting things I wouldn’t even repeat,” he continued.
“Just the audacity of some people, man, it sickens me. It makes me furious.”
But he won’t feed the haters and feels he doesn’t need to prove he’s with his child, “you don’t deserve that” he said.
Is Barry Keoghan married?
Barry was previously in a long-term relationship with Alyson Kierrans, a dentist, who he met at a London bar in February 2021.
Whilst the couple remained pretty tight-lipped on their romance throughout their relationship, they did make their red carpet debut in October 2021. However, in July 2023, multiple publications reported the pair had split up after two and a half years.
“They’ve grown apart over recent months and things have finally come to a head,” one source told The Sun at the time, adding, “As far as she’s concerned, it’s over.”
Despite fans questioning if Barry and Alyson were engaged, the couple never denied nor confirmed the rumours.
Before his romance with Alyson, Barry was in a long-term relationship with Shona Guerin. The pair began dating in 2017 and were living together in Los Angeles before they split in 2020.
