Brian McFadden of Westlife fame has certainly got the boy band magic in him even a decade and a half after splitting from his band, as demonstrated by a string of steamy romances with some really gorgeous people.

But perhaps none of these relationships have attracted as much attention as his seven-year romance with Aussie singer and The Voice judge Delta Goodrem, whose sultry voice and sexy vibe was a perfect match for Brian’s bad-boy appeal.

Let’s dive right into the saga of Brian McFadden and Delta Goodrem as we explore their relationship from start to finish.

Delta Goodrem And Brian McFadden: A Love Story’s Rise And Fall

Delta and Brian met in 2004, at a time when they were both were in the midst of their respective failing romances – Brian had just split from his whirlwind of a marriage with Atomic Kitten’s Kerry Katona, and Delta had just ended her relationship with tennis player Mark Philippoussis.

New Beginnings

The two crossed paths when Brian asked her to partner up with him in his song ‘Almost Here’. The song was a smash hit, soaring to the top of the charts in Ireland and Australia, while gaining widespread popularity throughout the rest of Europe. It was only fitting that their chemistry would be a smash hit as well – the two fell in love and began dating shortly after the recording.

The relationship generated bad press for Delta, who was seen by British media as coming between Brian and Kerry’s marriage. I’m pretty sure I got voted the most hated woman in Britain one year, she told the Sydney Morning Herald in an interview.

But even with the bad publicity, the romance prospered! And in November 2007, despite reports to the contrary, they got engaged to each other. In 2009, they told OK! that they were already planning a wedding abroad, with Bali as one of their options.

A Slow And Steady Decline

However, the marriage never came to be, and the relationship seemed to fizzle out with time. Delta later recounted to the Herald, I’m not going to negate that we had wonderful times when we met and I learnt a lot. We had a chapter and we did fall madly in love at that time. It wasn’t all bad, and it wasn’t all good in the end.

In 2010, Brian moved out of the Hunters Hill home he shared with Delta. There was no official statement from the two, though a friend of theirs told The Mirror, Delta’s not around and Brian gets bored. They’ve not split up.

Finally in 2011, the two called it quits, publicly ending their relationship. Delta Goodrem and Brian McFadden regretfully announce that they are no longer engaged, and after much consideration, have mutually decided to end their relationship, their public statement said.

Aftermath

Immediately after their breakup, Brian had only good things to say about Delta, with him tweeting, I love Delta and always will. She is one of God’s living angels. I thank her for giving me the best years of my life. Please give us time x”.

But in 2012, Delta told a very different story to Australian Vogue. There is so much I’d like to say. I was really unhappy and I didn’t know how to get out. I learnt. I got there in the end, she said, talking about her relationship with Brian.

She also Karl Stefanovic in a 60 Minutes interview, Do I wish that it ended earlier? Yes. Do I wish I had the courage to leave earlier? Yes, I do. I think what we came to is that we were very different people – extremely different people.

Shortly after her Vogue interview, Brian let loose a string of tweets that blasted his ex-fiancee: Sometimes silence is golden. People love to try and deflect attention from their own downfalls onto others. And for the record. I’ve seen it all before!! Randomly want to thank (fiancee) Vogue Williams for making me the happiest man on the planet.

It’s safe to say that it wasn’t quite an amicable split after all.

Brian And Delta: Duets

Both Brian and Delta are acclaimed singer-songwriters, and it makes sense that they had some collaborations together throughout their relationship.

Almost Here

‘Almost Here’ was the song that started it all. At the time, Brian and Kerry Katona had been broken up for six months, and he was writing about his experience with that breakup. Searching for the ‘right voice’ to partner up with, he chanced upon Delta singing ‘Lost Without You’ and decided that she was the right voice he’d been looking for. They kissed for the first time after the British Royal Variety Performance in 2004.

Mistakes

‘Mistakes’ was their second duet together, a bizarre song about a dysfunctional relationship, whose music video featured a grand piano’s destruction by chainsaw. It’s not the prettiest sight, but the couple clarified that it wasn’t reflective of their relationship. Privately we’re very romantic and very much in love,” Delta said on the set of the video.

The two actually performed the song live in August 2010, a month before its official release, at Oxford Art Factory.

Forgive Me Twice

Brian’s 2006 single ‘Forgive Me Twice’ doesn’t feature Delta in the song itself, but she’s credited as one of the songwriters, along with Tommy Lee James, Stuart Crichton, and Brian himself.

Together We Are One

Similarly, Delta’s 2006 single ‘Forgive Me Twice’ credits Brian McFadden as her co-writer, along with Guy Chambers.

Songs They Wrote About Each Other

Delta’s album Child of the Universe was filled with what were quite clearly diss tracks about her ex-fiance. One of the songs, ‘Dancing With a Broken Heart’, even has the lyrics, I wasted so many years, cried so many tears.

Brian’s then-wife, Irish celebrity Vogue Williams, tweeted angrily in response to the album’s launch: You say you don’t want to discuss your personal life so DON’T!! But please stop using it to promote yourself it’s embarrassing … #fake

Brian, meanwhile, wrote his 2008 single ‘Like Only a Woman Can’ about Delta. After the breakup, he vowed never to sing it again, making a solitary exception for his friend.

Brian’s controversial song ‘Just The Way You Are (Drunk At The Bar)’, which was widely criticised for its seeming resemblance to a date rape song. He insisted that he wrote the song about Delta, who he said easily got drunk.

The Couple’s Spitting Game

In 2018, Radio host Kyle Sandilands told co-host Jackie O that Delta and Brian used to visit his home and play a gross game involving spitting in each other’s mouths. Delta would sit with her mouth open and Brian would spit into her mouth and Delta would spit back into his mouth, Kyle said.

What was up with that? Kyle explained, Fun, they said fun. But I always thought, ‘Wow! That’s weird.’”

Whose Side Are You On?

The two have had little interaction since their breakup, at least in public. Today, Brian’s dating Rochdale PE teacher Danielle Parkinson, while Delta’s seeing rockstar Matthew Copley. The two haven’t had much of a spat since Delta’s 2012 album, but there’s likely to be bad blood between the two if Delta’s account of the relationship is to be believed. Whose side are you on?
