The year was 1999. David Beckham was a household name as Manchester United’s right-side midfielder. Victoria Beckham was a global sensation, touring the world as one-fifth of the Spice Girls – one of the best-selling, pop culture icons of the decade.
Already parents Brooklyn, who they had welcomed a year prior, it’s no surprise the young couple’s wedding was the celebrity event of the year. Taking place on July 4, the affair was held at Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland. Over 200 people attended the reception, prying paparazzi and onlookers lined the streets, Posh wore Vera Wang for the ceremony…and after? The couple switched into matching purple reception outfits designed by Antonio Berardi.
“I’m trying to think back to when I decided to wear a purple suit, and I don’t know when that happened,” David reminisced during the couple’s Netflix docuseries in 2023. “I think I just took Victoria’s lead on it, but what were we thinking?”
“It was fun,” added Victoria at the time. “We weren’t worried about what people were going to say. You just want to express yourself, that’s just who we were.”
Now 25 years later, the Beckham’s bold wedding attire is back in the spotlight after the couple decided to recreate their iconic wedding snaps for their anniversary – purple velvet thrones and all.
“Look what we found…” David cheekily captioned the new photo on Instagram, sharing a picture of him and Victoria in their original wedding day outfits to his 88 million fans.
It’s not the first time the pair have reminisced over their unique coordinated looks. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2021, Victoria reflected on their history of wearing coordinated outfits.
“It just seemed like a really good idea at the time, you know? It really did,” she explained. “I think it was a naiveté then. We didn’t know about fashion. We were just having fun with it, which, to be honest with you, is kind of the way it should be.”
The couple went on to welcome three more children; Romeo, Cruz and Harper, before renewing the vows in 2006.
“It was a lot more private, about six people there in our house, David shared with BBC Radio 4 in 2017. We’re a strong family unit. Of course, you make mistakes over the years, and we all know marriage is difficult at times. It’s about working through it.”
