Home & Away character Josh Barrett arrived in Summer Bay during August 2013. It became immediately obvious to the H&A fan base that Josh was not your average teenager. His heart was in the right place, but he was definitely a very troubled 16-year old. Let’s recap some of Josh’s major moments…
Meet Josh Barrett:
We first met Josh during Heath’s wedding reception that was held on the beach. It was here that he first met Maddy Osbourne (played by Kassandra Clementi) Maddy had recently broken up with her boyfriend Spencer and was not in a good place. Her behaviour became increasingly erratic, and after talking to Josh all night at the reception she kissed him, hoping to make Spencer jealous. Luckily Casey Braxton dragged her away before things got too serious, but the Barrett Bros weren’t quite finished causing trouble that evening. Andy (played by Tai Hara) and Josh start a car chase, ramming Casey and Maddy off the road. Casey is left paralysed as a result of the accident and is confined to a wheelchair, a incident which fuelled the existing bad blood between the Barrett and Braxton brothers.
Josh’s Love Interests: Maddy and Evie
After the accident, Maddy was there to support Josh as he tried to make amends with the Braxton family. They realised that there was chemistry between them and they began dating, but it wasn’t long before a fire at Mangrove High School put the new couple under a microscope. The police suspect Maddy and Josh after spying them at the scene of the crime on the CCTV. The teenagers had decided to sleep at the school after running away from home, but they couldn’t have picked a worse night.
Maddy finds out that their mutual friend Evie Macguire (played by Phillipa Northeast) has a massive crush on Josh, and she decides to humiliate her by making the crush public knowledge. What Maddy didn’t know was that this lead Josh to confront Evie, and soon he and Evie began spending more time together. Josh and Evie kissed while Josh and Maddy were still dating. After Josh was attacked by drug dealers, who mistook him for Andy, he admitted the illicit kiss to Maddy and she promptly dumped him. Josh and Evie started dating, but it wasn’t long before Josh cheated on Evie with his ex, Maddy. What a mess!
Josh’s involvement with drugs:
In 2014, when Josh and Evie were still together, the couple were pulled into Andy Barrett’s drug dealing storyline. Josh and Evie were kidnapped by the drug dealers that Andy owed money to. Tied up in the farmhouse and frightened, Josh and Evie were certainly relieved when the debt was paid in the nick of time. Unfortunately, Josh started using drugs himself to deal with the pressures of the HSC and Evie broke up with him.
Is Josh still on Home & Away?
Josh left Home & Away in 2016 and it’s unlikely that he’ll ever return. Josh shot and fatally wounded Charlotte in the 2015 season finale, after discovering that Charlotte was responsible for Denny Miller’s death and that she knew the role Andy Barrett had played in Jake Pirovic’s death. Josh was charged with manslaughter, and was given 20 years at his sentencing. Josh and Andy made a dramatic escape from court in a getaway car, but it was later revealed that they were recaptured and taken to prison.

Since finishing up on Home & Away, Jackson has appeared in several television programs. He played character Kyle in season four of Josh Thomas’ comedy series Please Like Me, and he’s already spent part of 2019 playing a leading role in upcoming feature film The Wheel. You may have seen him star in The Doctor Blake Mysteries, and he was also in Playing For Keeps, an Australian drama about the wives and girlfriends of AFL players.
Had Jackson Gallagher been involved with charities?
Jackson is a talented photographer, and in 2016 he travelled to Jordan with the Act For Peace charity. He spent time in refugee camps documenting what he witnessed there.
“I spent time with many Syrian families, who’s generosity knew no bounds, I was repeatedly welcomed into homes/rooms/tents, to share what little rations they had” Jackson wrote on his Instagram account. “I sat, and I listened, I was told harrowing stories of families being torn apart, homes being destroyed…Although these families had lived through unimaginable horrors, the way they spoke about their lives before the war was so relatable…That’s what stuck with me the most from my time in the camp, that at our core we are all so similar, we all want to live a happy and safe life and to be able to look after our friends and family. It makes me think about how often I take that lifestyle for granted everyday here in Melbourne.”
