Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom: A Brief History

Before their engagement, Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom both had marriages and dating lives that were as much in the spotlight as they were. Katy Perry was previously married to comedian Russell Brand, but their marriage was short-lived, and the pair called it quits in 2011 after only fourteen months of marriage. If you’ve seen Katy’s documentary, Part of Me, you would know how devastating the ordeal was for Katy given she was in the middle of a world tour.

Orlando Bloom, on the other hand, was married to Victoria’s Secret angel Miranda Kerr for three years. They have an eight-year-old son, Flynn. But unlike Perry and Brand, the two had an amicable split and still speak highly of each other. In an interview with Howard Stern, Bloom said, Miranda is family”, and that they will always be a part of each other’s lives.

Since their divorces, Katy and Orlando have both dated several people. But in 2016, they finally found their way to each other. Here’s a brief history of their romance.

From Small Talk To Legendary Lovers

The couple kept the early stages of their relationship hush-hush. They first met (and flirted!) at the 2016 Weinstein Company/Netflix Golden Globes afterparty where sparks definitely flew. If you must know, there was a dance-off involved. There was reportedly also some booty-shaking.

Months after speculations, signs of a PerryBloom romance were in full swing. They were spotted cozying up in several places together – including an Adele concert no less! Cosmopolitan reports that the pair were spotted in Hawaii and at Coachella undeniably looking like a couple. But the pair made a conscious effort to avoid the paparazzi.

In May 2016, Katy seemed to have made their relationship Instagram-official when she posted a photo on Instagram of her and Orlando clowning around at Cannes. Perry captioned the photo of them lying on the stairs, We cannes’t”. A beautiful and witty couple? We have to stan.

In August 2016 they made headlines in several entertainment magazines when they were photographed on a paddleboard in Italy. Orlando, buck naked, casually paddled while Katy sipped some cold beer.

Never Really Over

In March 2017, the couple shocked fans when they announced their split. Reps of Perry and Bloom told reporters at Us Weekly that the pair decided to take “loving space”. Katy even clapped back at bashers via Twitter saying, HOW BOUT A NEW WAY OF THINKING FOR 2017⁉️U can still b friends & love ur former partners! No one’s a victim or a villain, get a life y’all!😘”. Tell ‘em, Katy!

Thankfully, Katy Cats could breathe again knowing their split wasn’t forever. The couple was spotted at a concert together just a few moments after their breakup. It seems like the time apart helped them as they were able to rethink their priorities.

In Full Bloom

Finally, after dating on and off, Orlando Bloom popped the question Valentine’s Day 2019. The couple announced their engagement via an Instagram post, which Katy captioned, full bloom”.  Orlando posted the same photo and kept the caption short and sweet: Lifetimes”. Call us hopeless romantics, but we couldn’t help but gush.

Katy Perry spilled the details about the engagement in an interview with Capital Breakfast. It’s hard to imagine cool, calm and collected heartthrob Orlando Bloom being nervous, but that’s exactly how he looked, according to Perry. Also, he was clean-shaven and not wearing tennis shoes”. And that was the moment Katy knew something big was about to happen.

Walking On Air

Orlando, ever the romancer, took Katy on a helicopter ride where he would pop the question thousands of feet in the air! However, Katy later revealed on Jimmy Kimmel that the proposal didn’t go as smoothly as Orlando may have planned. They shared champagne on the helicopter, and, as a distraction, he gave her a note which had everything he wanted to say. Pretty sweet, right?

Funnily enough, Katy could see the struggling Orlando from her peripheral vision as he was trying to pull out a ring box that was way too big for his coat pocket. Nonetheless, a ripped coat pocket and broken champagne bottle later, Orlando got the yes he wanted.

So sure, the proposal didn’t go as planned, but what’s Orlando Bloom if he isn’t suave, right? They landed on top of a building and went downstairs where Katy was greeted with her family and friends in a room with the most flowers you’ve ever seen”. Good start, chaotic middle, perfect ending. We’ll take it.

Put A Ring On It

So what’s the story behind Katy Perry’s engagement? Orlando Bloom chose a cluster ring that featured an oval-cut deep pink centre stone and eight round cut diamonds that wrapped the stone to resemble a flower – a nod to the future Mrs Bloom.

From the looks of it, Mr Bloom has a penchant for cluster rings because he gave a similar one to ex-wife Miranda Kerr. It had a huge centre stone and a halo of smaller diamonds. Turns out he’s really committed to the bloom thing. We gotta hand it to him, though, he really went over-the-top with Katy’s ring. If experts are right, the cost would be massive.

Fun fact about cluster rings: They’ve been around since the 1900s, but it was Princess Diana who brought it back in vogue after Prince Charles proposed to her in 1981 with a sapphire cluster ring.

How Much Does It Cost?

So how much did the ring actually cost? Although no one has confirmed the price of the ring, experts Michael Fried, CEO of The Diamond Pro, and Andrew Brown, president of WP Diamonds weighed in on the cost to E! News.

According to Fried, the ring is made of a ruby centre stone which would cost somewhere around $USD250,000.

Andrew Brown upped the price by a LOT when he told E! that he believed the ring is actually a rare 4-carat pink diamond. That brings us up to a total of $USD5 million. In Brown’s words, the ring, “is truly one-of-a-kind and wildly valuable”. We see you, Orlando. Way to go all out!

Wedding Bells

Naturally, the next question is, “When is the wedding”? Very few details have been confirmed to the public, but by the looks of it, Katy and Orlando are set to tie the knot by the end of the year. We can’t wait to hear those wedding bells ring!
