Following the success of her first album SOUR the singer, songwriter and actress has returned with amazing new music, incredible fashion and a reminder that she is one of the fastest-rising “It Girls” of Gen Z.
Whilst her first album was easy to decipher, with songs like ‘Driver’s License’ and ‘Deja Vu’ clearly about her relationship with Disney co-star Joshua Bassett and his subsequent relationship with Sabrina Carpenter, fans are not as clear on who her latest tracks could be directed at.
Is Olivia Rodrigo in a relationship?
After months of speculation about Olivia’s relationship with Enola Holmes star Louis Patridge, the couple made their public debut at the Venice Film Festival.
The singer joined her boyfriend at the premiere of his film Disclaimer, opting for an understated slip dress.
The pair were first spotted together hanging out in London in October 2023, with a few sneaky snaps from fans showing Olivia and Louis looking especially cozy as they walked around the city.
Speaking to The Sun on the sighting, a source revealed, “Olivia flew to London with her best pal, singer Conan Gray, but it was Louis who she came to see.”
“They met through mutual pals earlier in the year and have been messaging quite a bit. She has spent a few days in the capital hanging out with them all but it’s been Louis who she has been inseparable from.
Although the new couple did not make any comment on their initial sighting at the time, Olivia and Louis seemingly confirmed their romance in December 2023 after they were photographed packing on the PDA and sharing a few laughs while on a shopping date in New York City.
After being spotted in the crowd supporting his new girlfriend on her GUTS World Tour, Louis spoke openly for the first time about his relationship with Olivia, revealing the role that fame has in their dynamic.
“Dating shouldn’t be done in the public eye. There’s enough going on between two people. You don’t need the voices of thousands of others in your head. I think she’s got it a lot worse than I have. I can be a bit of a normal person. She’s got tons and tons of eyes on her case,” he told British Vogue.
Louis also addressed the fan fervour surrounding his new romance, sharing that he feels “if there’s a load of people nattering in a room about you, you can choose to put your ear to the door to hear what they say or not,” adding, “I think you’re probably better off not letting curiosity get the better of you.”
Who has Olivia Rodrigo dated?
Zack Bia (February 2022 – August 2022)
Olivia Rodrigo was first linked to DJ and music executive Zack Bia in early 2022, with sources later confirming the relationship to PEOPLE in June 2022, however, the relationship was shortlived with rumours the pair had split by August of the same year.
“They’ve been over for a bit now,” a source later told PEOPLE in February. Although the pair themselves have not commented on the split, they have not been photographed together since, and fans suspect Olivia’s first single ‘Vampire’ from her second album was about her relationship with the DJ who has dated Maddison Beer and Madelyn Cline in the past.
The song features lyrics that reference an age difference and a months-long relationship, something she shared with both Zack Bia and Adam Faze, with fans debating who the track could be about. Zack was 26 and Olivia was 19 when they dated.
“How do you lie without flinching? / Oh, what a mesmerizing, paralyzing, f***ed up little thrill / Can’t figure out just how you do it and God knows I never will / Went for me and not her / ‘Cause girls your age know better,” she sings in the song.
Following the album’s release, Olivia discussed her songwriting process with The New York Times, revealing how her past romantic relationships have informed her music.
“I had such a desire to live and experience things and make mistakes and grow after SOUR came out, I kind of felt this pressure to be this girl that I thought everyone expected me to be,” she explained. “And I think because of that pressure, maybe I did things that maybe I shouldn’t have — dated people that I shouldn’t have.”
Although she didn’t mention any exes by name, fans have their own theories on who she was talking about and Olivia did note that her previous relationships heavily inspired her new record.
Adam Faze (June 2021 – February 2022)
E! News first reported that a then-18-year-old Olivia was dating then-24-year-old producer Adam Daze in June 2021.
A source close to the singer told the publication that she brought Adam as her plus one to the Space Jam 2 premiere and introduced him as her boyfriend. “They were really cute together and weren’t trying to hide their affection at all,” the source told the outlet.
By July 2021, the couple were photographed kissing and soon multiple publications revealed the couple were “getting serious.”
“[They] met through industry friends” a source told E! News. “It’s only been a few months, but she seems really happy with him and they are definitely dating exclusively and getting serious.”
By January 2022 rumours began circulating about the couple’s relationship breakdown amid Adam’s move from Los Angeles to New York. Despite both parties not commenting on their relationship, Olivia did discuss the best way to get over a breakup during an interview with British Vogue.
“Besides cutting off all contact, I think it’s important to not only forgive them but forgive yourself for letting everything happen,” she said. “That’s what I’ve learned.”
Despite some fans thinking ‘Vampire’ was about Zach Bia, many others believed the track to be about Adam thanks to lyrics that included: “Six months of torture you sold as some forbidden paradise / I loved you truly / You gotta laugh at the stupidity” and “I used to think I was smart / But you made me look so naive / The way you sold me for parts / As you sunk your teeth into me, oh / Bloodsucker, fame fucker / Bleedin’ me dry like a goddamn vampire.”
A source close to Olivia told PEOPLE bluntly, “The song isn’t about Adam Faze,” however that hasn’t stopped fans from gossiping.
Joshua Bassett (November 2019 – ?)
Despite being the most talked about relationship in Olivia’s dating history, we actually don’t know many details of the Disney co-star’s history.
We do know Olivia met Jousua Bassett on the set of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series in early 2019, She was 16 and he was 18 and played on-screen love interests Nini and Ricky.
When the series premiered in November 2019 fans quickly clocked into the couple’s amazing on-screen chemistry and off-screen friendship, suspecting the couple were an item in real life as well.
In January, the pair opened up about their close working relationship after collaborating on an original song for the TV series.
“I think we understood each other. It was really neat … how well we really did work creatively together,” Bassett told the L.A. Times at the time.
“I love him so much. He’s my best friend … It was like I wasn’t acting,” Olivia added.
By July 2020 Joshua was spotted hanging out with Sabrina Carpenter in LA, prompting speculation that he and Olivia had split and in October Josh and Sabrina seemingly confirmed their relationship by showing off their coordinating Halloween costumes.
In January 2021 Olivia sky-rocketed to stardom with the release of her hit ‘Drivers Licence’ and despite never confirming her relationship with Josh, fans quickly speculated that the track was about their relationship.
In the song, Olivia addresses a love interest, singing, “And you’re probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s everything I’m insecure about.”
Fans quickly interpreted the song to be about the alleged love triangle between Olivia, Josh and Sabrina (who is blonde and four years older than Olivia.)
“I totally understand people’s curiosity with the specifics of who the song’s about and what it’s about, but to me, that’s really the least important part of the song,” Olivia told Billboard when discussing the rumours surrounding the song. “It’s resonating with people because of how emotional it is, and I think everything else is not important.”
The same month ‘Drivers License’ was released, Joshua dropped his own single ‘Lie Lie Lie,’ further fuelling fan theories the two had fallen out.
In the song he sings, “I know what you say about me / I hope that it makes you happy / You can’t seem to get me off your mind.”
Sabrina released her own track ‘Skin’ the following month and again fans jumped to the conclusion that the track was about the drama between her and Olivia thanks to the lyrics: “Maybe you didn’t mean it / Maybe blonde was the only rhyme,” and, “Don’t drive yourself insane.”
Later that year Olivia addressed the feud rumours between her and Sabrina admitting that she hardly knew her. “I actually don’t know her at all,” she told Radio.com, “I think we’ve met once or twice in passing, but I’ve never had a conversation with her.”
In December 2021 Joshua released three emotional ballads that fans again believed to be about Olivia. The track ‘Crisis’ had the most pointed lyrics that included: “If you get to tell your truth / Then so do I / And it’s cool if you want me to play the bad guy / But don’t you dare act like I didn’t love you.”
The same month, Joshua confirmed to GQ that he and Olivia hadn’t spoken for around a year. “[Olivia] hasn’t spoken to me since ‘Drivers License’ came out,” he explained, noting that he had reached out to her.
But it looks like Olivia and Joshua’s relationship may have thawed out slightly the following year, with the pair reuniting at the season 3 premiere of High School Musical: The Musical.
