Could Buffy be making a comeback?

It’s long been rumoured that a reboot or revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the epic, 90s, feminist action hero-led series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, was on the horizon.

Unsurprisingly when those rumours swirl, it fills fans with a mixture of excitement (because we might get more of a beloved character) – and dread (because it might ruin perfection).

Surely though, if Gellar was involved, fans would feel that Buffy was in good hands.

But as Gellar tells WHO, while she’s flattered people believe she could still slay, she thinks a younger actress should step into the role.

“I think they will get someone younger if she does come back,” she says. “But if people think that I can still save the world and kick butt, I’m okay with that!”

“Buffy changed my lifes,” Gellar says.

Created by Joss Whedon, Buffy The Vampire Slayer premiered in 1997 and ran for seven seasons. It followed Buffy Summers, a teen vampire slayer who, with her group of friends, juggled the trials of adolesence and high school with saving the world.

Among the many who starred in the series, were Alyson Hannigan (Willow), David Boreanaz (Angel), Nicholas Brendon (Xander), Anthony Stewart Head (Rupert Giles) and James Marsters (Spike). It ended in 2003.

“I’m happy with how we ended things with Buffy,” Gellar, 42, says. “I loved playing her and I feel proud of what she stood for, what she still stands for.

“She wasn’t just the girlfriend or the token female, all things we take for granted in film and television now.

“I feel like Buffy was a part of that positive change.”

Recently, Gellar has softened her stance towards any form of new chapter in the Buffy universe. Now starring in Dexter prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, Gellar explained on Drew Barrymore’s chat show that she can see how a project could work.

“I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” Gellar said. “But watching ‘[And Just Like That…]’ and seeing ‘[Dexter: Original Sin],’ and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”
