Actor Zac Efron has assured his legion of fans that he’s fine after a “minor swimming incident” in Spain.
The 36-year-old star of The Iron Claw was taken to hospital after an accident at a holiday villa in Ibiza on August 2.
Efron was pulled out of the water by two people who worked at the villa, TMZ reported.
He was discharged from hospital on August 4 and later shared a message with his 61 million followers via his Instagram stories.
“Happy and healthy – thanks for the well wishes,” the actor wrote.
The message was accompanied by a picture of Efron shirtless and reclining on an exercise ball as he lifted a pair of 20kg dumbbells.
Was Zac Efron in a swimming accident?
Zac Efron was pulled from a swimming pool at a resort in Ibiza on Friday August 2. The star’s representative told PEOPLE he had been in a “minor swimming incident”.
The representative said Efron was taken to hospital as a “precautionary measure” but added that the actor was “fine”.
Exactly what happened in the pool has not been made clear.
It seems that in the wake of The Iron Claw’s release, Efron has been enjoying some recreational time out. He was recently spotted on a yacht in Europe with Scottish actor Gerard Butler and a group of mystery women.
What did Zac Efron do to his jaw?
It’s not the first time Efron has been in the wars – he claimed he “almost died” after injuring his jaw in an accident at home.
Efron told Men’s Health he had been running through the house in socks when he slipped, smashing his chin against the granite corner of a fountain.
His jaw had to be wired shut after the accident, with Efron saying his chin bone was left “hanging off his face” after the fall.
Efron said he had to do intensive physical therapy after the accident, which caused the muscles in his face to grow larger, compensating for the muscles that weren’t working properly.
“The masseters just grew,” he said, referring to the facial muscles that run along the side of the jaw.
“They just got really, really big.”
The changed shape of his face around 2021 – with a much squarer, more defined jawline – prompted rumours that he had undergone major cosmetic surgery.
Has Zac Efron had plastic surgery?
Efron says he has not had cosmetic surgery. He said he only became aware of the rumours after his own mum asked about it!
“My mum told me (about the plastic surgery rumours),” he revealed to Entertainment Tonight.
“I never really read the internet, so I don’t really care (what people say).”
He fired back at the speculation in his Men’s Health interview, saying, “If I valued what other people thought of me to the extent that they may think I do, I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this work.”
But the rumours persisted, especially after the trailers to The Iron Claw were released.
Efron bulked up considerably for the role, adding an extra 6.8kg of muscle in order to look the part.
Viewers were perplexed by how different he looked when video of Efron chatting about the move surfaced online.
“In the best way possible, I did not look anything like me,” he told Variety in 2023, adding that his physical transformation required “a lot of work”.
“That physical preparation was intense, but it really paid off,” he said.
What has Zac Efron said about body image?
Efron told Variety he had struggled with wanting to have a “perfect” body, especially as he was training for The Iron Claw.
“That necessity to be perfect – it became an obsession,” he admitted. “It was a singular focus for months. And your life goes out the window during prep.”
He added that he now understood what was required to maintain that standard was unsustainable in the long run for most people – himself included.
“I learned a lot over the course of Baywatch,” he said of his role in the 2017 film version of the popular TV series.
“I learned the hard way about not sacrificing my real health for a look on camera.”
