It a long way from the sandy beaches of Byron Bay where he spends most of his time these days, but the remote community of Bulman (also known as Gulin Gulin) clearly still feels like home to actor Chris Hemsworth.
As a child, the Marvel superstar lived in the Northern Territory with his family – and earlier this month, he returned to the town while filming in the area for the second season of the docuseries Limitless.

“When I was younger my family and I lived in a remote community in the Northern Territory,” he posted to Instagram with several photos.
“Some of my earliest and happiest memories are from that time. Now, 35 years later I’ve been lucky enough to take a trip back there. I couldn’t be more grateful to the people of Gulin Gulin for welcoming us with such warmth and kindness. Much love and appreciation.”
Hemsworth, 40, has described his time in the Top End as a youngster with his brothers, Luke and Liam, as a wild time spent mostly outdoors, which defined him and has clearly shaped how he raises his own children, India Rose, 11, and 10-year-old twin sons, Sasha and Tristan.
“I grew up around buffaloes and crocodiles, not phones and video games,” he recalled. “Growing up in the Australian outback, I had adventures and spent most of my time outside – it shaped me and I am very proud of that,” he said in a 2019 interview with SilverKris.
His parents, Leonie, a teacher, and Craig, a counsellor, ran the community centre in Bulman, which also operated as a post office and store. He said his school was just two classrooms filled with 60 kids aged between 5 and 17.
Hemsworth’s own children have inherited his love of adventures and being outside, with the family often taking thrill-seeking holidays together, dirt-biking, surfing or messing around on their estate in Byron Bay.
