The surprise reunion took place during the big red chair segment at the end of the show, where audience members have the opportunity to tell the celebrity guests an interesting story.

In this case, it was a man named James who reveals he attended the same primary school as Sheeran, 25, before telling the Castle On The Hill singer that they new each other growing up.

Sheeran hurries over to the screen and exclaims, “What the f**k. He was my best mate growing up!”

James then tells the story of when Sheeran, who was a vegetarian, visited his house for dinner and ate sausages prepared by James’ mother.

“Mum cooked sausage and mash for tea. Ed said after the meal they were ‘the best sausages I’ve ever tasted, where did you get them from?’ Mum had to lie because she had no clue.”

Ed then explained: “That was the first time I ever ate meat. And the first time I ever watched a Simpsons episode was at your house as well”
