Hamish Blake, the 37-year-old host of LEGO Masters (continues Sun., May 5 at 7pm, and Mon., May 6 and Tue., May 7 at 7.30pm; Nine), talks about the ratings hit.
Did you play with Lego growing up?
Of course! Who didn’t? For a large chunk of my childhood me or my brother’s bedroom floor could be reliably counted on to be covered in LEGO.
Have you started to get better at building blocks with age?
I steal architectural inspiration from real buildings and pretend to the kids I just thought of it in the moment.
Why did you decide to join LEGO Masters?
It genuinely seemed like a fun show, and I love that it is purely about celebrating creativity. There are much worse messages you could be putting out. Plus, it’s LEGO. Nine-year-old me would kill me if he found out I grew up and said no to the LEGO show.
Do you miss working alongside your usual partner, Andy Lee?
It’s a different experience navigating things on your own, but it’s fun. Of course working with Ando is also heaps of fun, and we’re not apart for long – we’re about to head off shooting another travel adventure together.
How did you find working with Brickman?
Brickman is great. There really is no-one else to judge this contest. His passion for the bricks is what drives the teams to try and build ever more impressive stuff.
Do you have a favourite team?
I thought I would have one, but a lot of teams became my favourite for different reasons. Plus it’s also pretty unprofessional for a host to have a favourite. I was happily surprised by how much fun each team was. Yes, there’s a lot of LEGO building, but not for me. I spent my days roaming around having a genuinely fun time with them all.
Would you ever consider reality TV?
Only ever Next Top Model but I fear time may be slipping away from me!
