Before finally deciding on her Misha Collection pantsuit for the Melbourne Cup, Jennifer Hawkins checked first to see if it met the famous Flemington dress code. “I did ask if I’m allowed to wear a pantsuit because the guidelines are very strict,” the model businesswoman—greeting friends in the Myer marquee in the Birdcage at 11AM—tells WHO. “Things have become relaxed if you’re still traditional and classic and ladylike.”
Hawkins, 32, had her outfit (teamed with a Melissa Jackson cartwheel hat) custom-made “because my body is longer,” she says. “I’ve seen a lot of pantsuits around, but this reminds me of the 1970s. Big hats, wide leg pants.” The colour, she says, “is like a blood red orange. I love it. It makes you feel sexy.”
A Flemington veteran, Hawkins shares insider tips to get track-ready. “You just have to leave yourself enough time so you can relax and get ready, so you’re not running out the door and patting your forehead down,” she says. “Then when you get to the event you can relax.”
Her other big tip for the Melbourne Cup? Hawkins didn’t hesitate when asked who’ll she back in the big race. “Bondi Beach,” says the Myer ambassador.
