She has remained largely out of the public eye since the death of her husband David Bowie in January.
But Iman, 61, attended her first event since losing her longtime love to liver cancer aged 69, stepping out for Tom Ford’s New York Fashion Week show on Wednesday, September 7.
At the fashionable soiree, the former model opened up to Good Morning America about losing her husband, and then her mother, Marian Abdulmajid, less than three months apart.
“It’s been a tough year, but I’m holding up,” she said, before revealing she was wearing a gold necklace in Bowie’s honour.
“I’m wearing this until my death. [Fashion designer] Hedi Slimane made it for me,” she said. “It just says ‘David.’”
The fashion icon shared a selfie to Instagram from the night, writing: “My first night out attending an event since last year! Beat by @porschefabulous @imancosmetics #steppingout #imancosmetics.”
Sharing another snap of her full ensemble, the Somalian beauty wrote: “Made it my first night out! Thanks @tomford for a very glam but intimate presentation #tomford.”
Iman also posted a snap with fellow model Cindy Crawford.
Bowie and Iman met in October of 1990, and “they were inseparable” ever since, the couple’s friend, hairstylist Teddy Antolin, told WHO in January.
“They really knew each other because they had come up and traveled in the same circles. They were great together,” Antolin added at the time. “She was a real force and he needed a woman by his side to keep him focused.”
The model and the rocker married in Tuscany after two years together. In 2000, they welcomed their daughter Alexandria “Lexi” Zahra Jones.
Iman and Lexi have stayed out of the public eye since Bowie passed away at age 69 on January 10 2016 after a long, private battle with cancer.
