It’s hard to believe it was 13 years ago that Jessica Tovey made her debut on Home and Away, playing troubled teen Belle Taylor.
“I was so young – 17 when I started,” says Tovey, now 31. “I was at the end of year 12; when I left I was 21, so a decade ago. Wow.”
At the time, Tovey was just starting her career. Since then she has gone on to star in Wolf Creek, Wonderland, Paper Giants, and a host of other film and TV series.
Was she there at the same time as expat heartthrob Chris Hemsworth? “I was. We overlapped for about a year,” Tovey explains. “He and I didn’t work together that much. We did get lost in a bush due to a helicopter crash at some point – that great tragic storyline!”
Tovey says she hasn’t kept in touch with as many of her old co-stars as she would have liked, but is still very good friends with Todd Lasance. “I still keep in touch with him, because he was such a great friend during the time of filming, and a beautiful human,” she says.
“I also see a few of the crew. But certainly whenever I see any of the Home and Away guys at events, we always catch up and it’s really lovely to see them, people like Lynne McGranger and Ada [Nicodemou]. I think once you are in the family, you are kind of always in the family.”
So would she ever follow in the footsteps of Hemsworth and move Stateside? “I have always left that door open, but to be honest, I have had the work in Australia, so I haven’t felt the need to go there yet. But never say never.”
