Even before lights out at the first race, the 2024 Formula 1 season has been packed full of surprises. While our nation’s treasure Daniel Ricciardo may have unceremoniously left the sport following the Singapore GP (yes, we’re still in mourning), our Kiwi cousin Liam Lawson has stepped in to fill his race seat for the second time.
After knocking out three-time World Champion Max Verstappen in his third-ever F1 qualifying, fans have been eager to learn more about the 22-year-old reserve driver. Now, as he makes the step into Formula 1 alongside his teammate and bestie Yuki Tsunoda, we’re getting to know more about Lawson’s life outside the track.
Who is Liam Lawson?
Hailing from Hastings, New Zealand, Liam Lawson is a 22-year-old Formula 1 driver for Visa CashApp RB.
Before touring the globe as a Red Bull reserve driver, Lawson began his motorsport journey at seven, taking up go-karting in Pukekohe. After working his way through the karting ranks, Lawson made the journey across the ditch to Australia in 2017 to pursue his career by taking part in the Australian F4 Championship.
His big break came in 2019 when he debuted in the Eurocup Formula Renault series and after delivering consistently impressive performances, Lawson signed to the Red Bull Junior Team in February of that year. Lawson then moved to the FIA Formula 3 Championship, where he consistently finished on the podium, earning him a reputation as a fierce competitor. In 2021, he advanced to Formula 2, showcasing his talent with multiple points finishes.
His standout performances led to a call-up to AlphaTauri in 2023 as a substitute for Daniel Ricciardo, and taking after his racing hero Lightning McQueen (if you know, you know), Lawson battled the rest of the grid for five races and earned two championship points.
Does Liam Lawson have a girlfriend?
We hate to break it to you girlies, but Liam Lawson does have a girlfriend. The RB driver has been in a relationship with 21-year-old Hannah St. John since October 2022.
While many couples on the grid keep their love life largely out of the spotlight, Lawson and St. John’s romance has dedicated a loyal social media following thanks to their super cute Instagram snaps and regular vlogs together of their adventures on YouTube.
Outside the world of Formula 1, St. John is a pre-med student at Arizona State University, with the couple splitting their time between the U.S., UK, and New Zealand.
