The multi-talented Mandy Moore won her way into millennial hearts with Y2K-era pop hits like “Candy” and “I Wanna Be with You,” but in recent years she’s put her energy towards acting rather than singing.
However, that could change very soon. “I want to get back to music,” the 32-year-old told reporters at the Television Critics Association tour in Beverly Hills on Tuesday. While she doesn’t have any concrete plans at the moment, she admits that she misses singing “a lot.”
Though a prolific actress, earning praise in the Disney Tangled series and her new show This Is Us, she hasn’t released a new album of her own material since 2009’s Amanda Leigh. But that doesn’t mean music is far from her mind.
“Life sort of put it on the back burner,” she says. “I think being in films and trying to do television has always been such a huge priority for me … I feel like it gave me way more opportunities than music.” But now that her acting career is “percolating,” she’s ready to dive back into the pop pool.
Lately there have been plenty of ups and downs for Moore. In January 2015 she separated from husband Ryan Adams after six years of marriage. The divorce was finalised in June of this year.
“I feel like a lot has happened in the last two years of my life that I want to be able to put into music – and it’ll be cathartic.”
While she says “life is not easy” after the divorce, Moore is certain that the hardship will make her new music richer than her past work.
“I think I have a lot more colourful experiences to bring to the table at 32 than I did at 22 … I feel overwhelmingly empowered. I’m really happy. Nobody could pay me money to go back 10 years ago. I know who I am. I feel comfortable in my skin more so than I ever have, and I want my music to reflect that.”
