He failed to win the nation over when he used Hayley Vernon’s toothbrush to scrub their dirty toilet, only to later accuse his cheating Married At First Sight wife of still using drugs.
WATCH: David confirms he’s found love since MAFS appearance
So it’s little wonder this season’s ‘villain’ deeply regrets applying for the Channel Nine series. Taking to his Instagram to answer some of our burning questions, David said his time on the experiment was “f***ing soul-destroying” admitting he’d “100 per cent never do something like that again.”
“I didn’t watch the show before I went on,” he said when asked whether he knew the show’s producers have their own agenda. “I wish I had of watched it, that’s for sure.”
It’s no secret David struggled to come to terms with his wife cheating with Michael Goonan, with an insider revealing he had to be on 24/7 watch in his room because producers seriously feared what he’d do if he was left alone.
As per New Idea’s source, he was “pushed to the edge” while his hatred for the bodybuilder grew, leaving him no choice but to take a step back and reassess whether he wanted to continue participating in the experiment.
“About three days after the cheating scandal happens, I’ve heard nothing from Hayley and I’m in a really dark place … I still had her room key, and that’s when I did something really childish,” David told news.com.au’s Not Here To Make Friends podcast of the events that led up to the incident.
To make matters even worse, he still believes there was no harm done, saying: “She used it for five days. It’s her own poo, it’s her own bacteria in her own body so it’s not going to hurt her.”
He also had no qualms about accusing Hayley of still being an addict. In an explosive video diary he recorded after he moved into his own hotel following a nasty fight with Hayley, David tore into his wife, revealing she gave him a number of reasons to question her sobriety throughout the dating experiment.
“Her idea of being a reformed drug addict is her turning around and saying she doesn’t do any hard drugs… but still smokes weed,” David said in the 11-minute clip which was obtained by New Idea exclusively. “And then she said, ‘I don’t mind having a cheeky line now and again.’ That’s someone who is still an addict. They’ve matched me with a smoking drug addict who is so inconsiderate and rude.”
“She can’t change her past with drugs, and I accept that, so I can let that slide. But here I am with a recovering drug addict that’s a smoker,” he said as their co-stars shook their heads.
The row quickly became so intense, relationship counsellor John even had to intervene, later reprimanding David for his shocking outburst.
“David, this is for you. Hayley has in the past had issues with substances. In the past, but not now. She is someone who was very resilient, just like you, who had a huge amount of time for personal growth and development,” he said. “You can’t judge her by her past. She is not chained by it.”
