A giant baby, creepy doll and fully-loaded kebab are just some of this year’s wild costumes on The Masked Singer Australia. And while we eagerly await the dramatic reveal of each and every elusive contestant, we’re having fun playing the guessing game.
But when it comes to one of the masks, fans are convinced they’ve already figured it out.
WATCH: Vampire performs Gangsta’s Paradise on The Masked Singer Australia
Vampire has wowed panelists Dannii Minogue, Jackie O, Urzila Carlson and Dave Hughes with their renditions of Sucker and Gangsta’s Paradise.
With a voice like that, they’re sure to be a singer in the real world, right? Well, fans are convinced that the powerful voice behind the Vampire is pop icon Anastacia.
“There’s no way this isn’t Anastacia, no one else has a tone like that,” one fan wrote on YouTube.
“Vampire sounds exactly like Anastacia,” another adds on Twitter.
But just because it sounds like Anastacia, doesn’t necessarily mean it is her. Does the popstar match the clues? Let’s take a look at all the evidence from The Masked Singer.
One of the biggest giveaways was this clue: “The nations of the earth have cheered me on. Tears have flowed too. I have not slept since my teenage years. My life is like a waking dream.”
Though she is American, Anastacia has famously enjoyed international success – especially in Europe.
She’s won MTV EMAs, Italian Music Awards and in 2004, her self-titled album Anastacia peaked at number one in 11 countries and was Europe’s second-biggest-selling album of the year. Sounds like someone who was ‘cheered on by the nations of the earth’ to us.
Considering Anastacia got her start on MTV in her teen years and began working towards a music career in her 20s, it certainly sounds like she wouldn’t have ‘slept’ since she was a teenager. Spending years working to score her first record deal, which she got just before turning 30, she also long ‘dreamed’ of the life she has now.
“Tears have flowed” could be a reference to a number of her songs that talk about heartbreak and crying, like I’m Outta Love and Black Roses.
In one of the episodes, Vampire’s visual clue was a photo of Elton John. Anastacia worked with the singer, performing Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting) on stage together in the 2000s.
Meanwhile, another hinted at a connection to Freddie Mercury. Anastacia performed with Queen in South Africa in 2003 and played the Killer Queen in the Dutch We Will Rock You musical in 2019.
One clue hinted that Vampire’s don’t “concern ourselves with stupid things.” Did you know Anastacia literally released a song called Stupid Little Things in 2014? What. A. Coincidence.
Need more convincing? One of the Vampire’s clues references the age-old battle between Vampires and daylight – with the contestant saying they embraced it.
“I am Vampire and I am eternal. I do not fear the daylight, I embraced it and it embraced me. It fed me when I most needed it.
Want to take a guess which record label gave Anastacia her big break? Daylight – a label that belonged to Sony Music Entertainment. She signed with them in 1999 and released her debut album, Not That Kind, with her breakout single I’m Outta Love. And the rest, as they say, is history.
