It’s been 25 years since beloved rom-com My Best Friend’s Wedding was released, and actress Julia Roberts has nothing but love for the star-studded cast.

“None of us knew each other before we made the movie, and we just had a really great chemistry,” she told E!. “It just worked. I mean, we all really liked each other.”

In the film, a young Roberts stars as food critic Julianne. When best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) announces he’s getting married to Kimmy (Cameron Diaz), Julianne realises she’s in love with him.

Speaking to People TV in 2019, Roberts said the film’s honesty could have been what audiences loved so much about it.

“The alchemy of the four of us together and the city of Chicago, and the story that we were outside, that we were running around, all these things that we were pretending to do – we were doing,” she said. “It was all very refreshing, in a way.”

Writer Ronald Bass said he wanted to create two things that had never been shown in a romantic comedy before. “I wanted to do a story where the heroine didn’t get the guy in the end. We reversed expectations,” he told People TV.

“The other thing that I wanted to do was create a relationship for my heroine with the person who would be the best looking, the smartest, the kindest, the gentlest and the most rational character in the film, and he would be a gay man [Rupert Everett as Julianne’s best friend, George]. Gay men hadn’t been depicted in that way at the time.”

Director P. J. Hogan believes romantic comedy is a difficult genre to master, telling Entertainment Weekly in 2019 they don’t often feel fresh.

“I think what kills romantic comedies is they often feel pre-packaged or like frozen food that hasn’t quite thawed,” he said.

“But when I see the film, it’s still got a snap to it. When it’s funny, it’s really funny, and the actors all glow. And I think Julia was extraordinary in the lead role. I mean, who else could’ve pulled that off?”

Diaz was also thrilled to have worked with the cast. “I got to work with Julia. It was, like, a huge break for me,” she told Entertainment Weekly.

In 2018, Mulroney told CBS’ The Talk he’s keen for a sequel. “I’ve been clear from the beginning,” he said. “I’ve been clear from 1997 that I’m ready for a sequel. So, I’m on record!”

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Julia revealed that My Best Friend’s Wedding was the movie from her past she would like to see receive a potential sequel, “because there’s so many people in it, and to see what they’re doing and how Kimmy (Cameron Diaz) and Michael’s (Mulroney) marriage is going.”

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the Anyone But You premiere Dermot Mulroney said he was “thrilled” to hear his former co-star was also open to reprising her role.

Though Dermot admitted that he hadn’t “touched base with Julia yet to get to the bottom of it,” he has “always said yes” to a follow-up movie.

“Maybe it’s time. I sure hope so,” he added. “That movie brought so much joy. It would be amazing to re-up on that.”
