If you’re anything like us, you’ve no doubt watched episode after episode of Nine Perfect Strangers.
The mini-series based on the best-selling novel by Liane Moriarty, follows nine troubled individuals as they visit wellness retreat Tranquillum House run by the captivating and slightly terrifying Masha, and discover not everything is as it seems.
Whilst the novel is set in Australia, the series takes place in the US state of California but though it was originally meant to be filmed stateside, Nine Perfect Strangers ended up being shot right here in Australia.
Producer Bruna Papandrea, who is also Australian, revealed that because of the pandemic filming had to be moved Down Under.
“We had everyone ready to go, all the actors, all the production crew,” she told Financial Review. “And then the country started to shut down, and we realised it was not going to be possible to shoot in America. So we moved the whole thing to Australia.”
If you can’t quite put your finger on where that gorgeous backdrop is, look no further than the Byron Bay hinterlands. The north NSW coastal town is known for its laidback lifestyle, rolling hills and as the celeb capital of the country.
The interior and outdoor pool scenes at Tranquillum House were actually shot at a real life meditation retreat, SOMA.
With a 22 acre forest, an infinity pool and a yoga dome, you can recreate the Nine Perfect Strangers experience yourself but it doesn’t come cheap. A three day retreat will set you back $2,500 or $3,995 if you’re part of a couple.
Meanwhile the scenes with Masha’s private pool and some of the guests’ rooms were shot at Lune de Sang – a 146 hectare former dairy property in the Byron Bay Hinterlands.

The show’s all-star cast includes Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy and Bobby Cannavale as well as Aussie stars Asher Keddie and Samara Weaving.
“When Australia shut its borders, I thought I wasn’t going to be able to go home for a very long time,” former Home and Away star Samara previously told WHO.
“I felt so lucky to be offered a job filming a series based on a Liane Moriarty book and getting to work alongside Nicole [Kidman] and Melissa [McCarthy]. Coming home and filming in beautiful Byron during such a crazy time was the icing on the cake.”
Nine Perfect Strangers is streaming now on Amazon Prime.
