Miley and Billy Ray are arguably the biggest celebrities in the Cyrus family, but now Miley’s younger sister Noah has released a song detailing what it was like growing up in the spotlight.
Noah’s song Young And Sad details her relationship with older sister Miley and the powerful lyrics resonated with fans.
“My sister’s like sunshine, always bringing good light wherever she will go,” they read. “And I was born to rain clouds when they blew the flame out, blessed in her shadow.”
But in an Instagram Live video, the 20-year-old singer further explained the meaning behind her song.
“Being born in the family I was in, everybody gave me such a hard time for having a hard time being Miley’s little sister, but I always felt like I was that person that no one gave a s*** about due to what people said to me online,” she said.
“It was absolutely unbearable. And that’s why I write, ‘My sister’s like sunshine / Always bringing good light wherever she’ll go / And I was born to rain clouds / Blessed in her shadows.’ Because that’s why everybody always says to me, that no matter what, I was going to be in that shadow. And I always believed that, and that’s so hard for me to overcome.”
Noah went on to say that being in Miley’s shadow played havoc on her self esteem and that it was something she heard “her whole life.”
“And it was either that or that I wasn’t enough in some way, whether it was the way I look or the way I am. Like I said the other day, I feel like sometimes I feel like I don’t even breathe right sometimes,” she confessed.
“Basically, that was what the song is about, and I just wanted to open up about that once and for all, because that’s been a big part of my life, and I probably won’t talk about it anymore, but I just wanted to put it out.”
“Everybody always says, ‘You’re giving the people power by seeing it,’ but I can’t control seeing it. You guys are young, you know, the Internet. And it’s been really tough on me, so that song is just pretty tough to get through.”
Noah has spoken about being compared to her famous older sister previously.
The singer, who also starred on Miley’s hit Disney channel show Hannah Montana said in 2019 that “being told that you’re less than someone in your family, that can f*** up a person.”
“I’m not less than anybody. Miley has her platform, obviously, because she’s an amazing artist. But to each of us our own. Miley and I are completely different people,” she added.
