“The whole show was a whirlwind,” Joe Bobbin chuckles as he chats to WHO over the phone as his Farmer Wants a Wife journey comes to an end. “It was really about trying to find what mattered and where we’re at and who would best suit me.”

The cattle and sheep farmer from Bombala, New South Wales has become a stand out character on this year’s show, and he observes  wryly that people have started to recognise him “wanting selfies and stuff like that, so [my life has] changed quite a bit actually”.

Now at the final hurdle in his quest for love, the 33-year-old has nothing but praise for the ladies – Sarah, 31, and Keely, 28 – who he selected as his final two.

“I had a feeling that Sarah would make it pretty far on the show from when [we] very first met. We’ve lived a very similar life,” the star gushes of the blonde livestock administrator, a New South Wales native who grew up on a farm.

Meanwhile, he praises adventure-loving Keely, a resort office supervisor from Queensland, for grasping the opportunity to embrace farm life “with both hands”.

It hasn’t been an easy ride for Joe, who thought he had found “The One” earlier in the series in Susie, who was his mum’s choice and a late addition to the group. But a shock confession that she couldn’t handle farm life led her to exit from the show.

There were tears as Susie confronted her true feelings, admitting, “this is really hard,” before telling Joe, “you deserve someone who is sure about that lifestyle”. In a heart-wrenching moment Joe vulnerably responded, “I wish I was what you wanted.”

Now, Joe looks back at all the drama with a much clearer lens. “Things burnt really bright and we were really strong, I thought it was good right at the start. But sometimes those things that burn bright, burn out the quickest and that seemed to be what happened,” he tells WHO, adding that he was grateful that she was honest about her feelings in the end.

“I’ve done my best to sort of move on from that situation,” he admits. “Susie made her choice because of how she felt and that was the right choice for her, but ultimately it was the right choice for me as well.”

He confirms that no, they haven’t been in touch since. He has, however, found “friends for life” in his fellow farmers – something that gives this year’s much-anticipated show reunion an extra significance for him.

“It will be a great episode … It was a great time to see everyone and where everyone was at,” Joe teases, and WHO understands all six farmers from this year’s season will make an appearance at the reunion this year.

So what’s next for Joe? The truth may not be what all fans want to hear.

“There are no proposals in the near future,” he admits. “I think at the end of all this it’s still only early days. The building blocks are there.

“I definitely see my future on the farm, I’ve plans of building my own house … hopefully there’ll be someone by my side,” he shares.

Is Farmer Joe a real Farmer?

Shortly after the season began airing, rumours began to swirl suggesting Joe was not a farmer, instead a FIFO worker who simply lived on his family’s farm.

But he was quick to deny the allegations, telling Yahoo! Lifestyle that the rumours were “pretty unfair.”

“I grew up here in Bombala, NSW. I’m a part-owner alongside my mum and dad, which is not uncommon for any sort of younger person,” he explained.

“Like a lot of blokes my age, farmers, things like that, we weren’t sure what we wanted to do when we finished school and stuff…I went out and got into construction, did a lot of FIFO when I was in my early 20s, which led to the money to be able to buy part of the farm from my parents,” he continued.

“I’ve used my skills that I’ve learned along the way to be able to do these things, but my address and my home is here on the farm. And I spend the majority of my time here. Everyone tries to make it out like you can’t be a real farmer if you have a second income. I don’t really understand that, like most people have a second income these days.”

Who will Farmer Joe choose?

Whilst the season may still be airing, many fans are curious to see who Farmer Joe ends up with. Although we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see, fans have begun looking towards betting odds to get a feel for who is in the lead.

For most of the season, Sarah has been pegged as the winner of Farmer Joe’s Heart, with odds currently sitting at $1.40.
