Almost a decade into their marriage, the Aussie couple are still going strong

The pair have kept their relationship notoriously private ever since hitting things off at a festival in New York almost a decade ago, but Lara and Sam Worthington proved that they are more in love than ever during a recent trip to Paris.

The couple stepped out in the City of Love for Paris Fashion Week, pulling double duty by putting in a front row appearance at the Hermès SS24 Men’s show while also using the opportunity to spend some one-on-one time together without their kids.

Putting on a rare display of affection, the fashionable pair also posed for pictures at the OTW By Vans Party with Sam, 46, wrapping his arm protectively around his wife. The Avatar star was also on hand to wish his wife a happy birthday on June 22, with the blonde beauty celebrating 36 in style alongside her husband and friends.

This solo time together has proved crucial for Lara and Sam in keeping the spark alive in the almost 10 years they’ve been together. Despite his acting career seeing him on the road a lot, the star revealed earlier this year that they have a relationship rule that sees them reunite every fortnight.

“When you’re doing my job, you’re away a lot from your family and I’m away from Lara. The way we do it, we have a two-week rule, and I fly back no matter what or where I am,” he explained on Nova 100’s Ben, Liam & Belle show. “I was on a job which was like an eight-hour trip away and I would get on the plane, fly the eight hours, spend a couple of hours with her and then fly back. Yeah, just because you have to keep it alive, connected.”

It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the pair. Sam previously revealed that he had turned to alcohol to help him cope after his fame soared following the film release of Avatar in 2009.

“Drinking helped me get through the day. They could probably smell it on me, but when they looked at me, they couldn’t tell. I was still doing my job – I just don’t think that I was doing it very well,” he confessed to Variety. “I was an emotional drunk. I got more emotional and erratic the longer I drank. I don’t think I was mean, exactly, but I could be belligerent, petulant.”

But it was Lara who, after meeting the star in late 2013, gave him an ultimatum that saw him tackle his battle with booze for good. “You can do what you want, but I don’t need to be around this,” she told him at the time.

The pair went on to welcome three sons, Rocket, 8, Racer, 6, and River, 3, with Lara revealing last year that their kids come first and foremost. “As a family unit, we’re all very close,” she told Stellar magazine. “We’ve only got each other. Sam and I are a good team. We’re both Australians and we have the same values. We come at our children as a team and I think that that’s really important.”

Carving out time together – like making mini trips to Paris and following their own passions – also ranks high up on the couple’s list, which will no doubt see them survive decades to come. “We still very much have our life, and the kids kind of come with us,” Lara has previously explained. “I still really love having my own identity and so does my husband, so it definitely is a challenge, but a good challenge.”
