Australian TV presenter and weatherman, Sam Mac, is on our screens almost every day.
Beloved by many for his goofy antics – which recently saw him stack it at a skateboarding school while he was meant to be doing the weather for Sunrise – many fans were thrilled to see Sam find love amid the pandemic last year.
He introduced his girlfriend, Rebecca James, to his public life via Instagram, and we have watched them as they seem to only fall deeper in love in the year that’s followed, one smiley selfie at a time.
Here’s a look back at their cute, swift love story, which began in a very modern way.
Sam took to Instagram to announce his new relationship in March, 2021, penning a long caption about how the two came to meet.
“This is Bec. We were introduced on insta last year via our mutual friend @brookiechook,” he began.
“Bec lives in Melb, & I’m in Syd, so the Victorian border restrictions meant it was illegal for us to meet in person,” he continued.
“Here’s where it gets cool. We very quickly struck up a great friendship. Insta chats, phone calls, Friday Zoom drinks, we spoke every single day for almost six months!
“So when restrictions eased late last year, we could finally meet in person. By this stage I felt like I knew everything about her…except if she was interested in being more than friends 🤷🏽♂️.”
However, the pair soon realised it was meant to be.
“Eventually, over a few Harry Potter marathons & a glass or two of Zonzo, we discovered we were both feeling exactly the same. We were just so cautious about ruining the friendship,” Sam explained.
“Bec is obviously super driven and taking on the world. But it was her calmness & kindness that I was drawn to (& the fact she’s a 17/10). She makes me so happy & I’m absolutely delighted to share her with you guys,” he shared.
Sam first appeared on Bec’s Instagram about a week later, when she shared snaps of Sam spending Easter with her family in the Yarra Valley, in her home state of Victoria.
Since their announcement, the pair seem to have become inseperable – even with the distance that originally kept them apart.
Bec supported Sam through the launch of his first book, Accidental Weatherman, a plight he thanked her for on Instagram.
“Special shout-out to this stunner for her unwavering support & input throughout the writing & launch of my first book,” he wrote.
“Everything is better with you by my side.”
Bec moved to Sydney when border restrictions allowed it, after the couple weathered the 2021 Sydney and Melbourne lockdowns apart.
“Look who just moved to Sydney!” Sam wrote on Instagram beside a photo of himself and Bec on a rainy day in Sydney Harbour.
“We celebrated by getting a photo of Bec with a much loved, globally recognised Australian icon. & the Harbour Bridge,” he joked.
About a month later, the pair announced that they had bought a house together in Sydney.
A month after that, they celebrated one year since meeting in real life.
The couple have seemed to go from strength to strength, most recently celebrating Sam’s birthday.
They also shared a laugh together when Rebecca’s brother, Olympic snowboarder Scotty James, was asked about their relationship in interview – when Sam was literally on set.
Sunrise hosts David Koch and Natalie Barr were interviewing Scotty ahead of his stint at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, when they asked if he thought Rebecca “could have done better”.
“I was waiting for this! No one will ever be good enough for my sister Rebecca,” Scotty joked while Sam was seen laughing on screen.
Having already ticked a house off their list, and with Bec’s brother’s tacit approval, we wonder if any wedding bells will be chiming for this loved-up pair anytime soon!
