The AFLW’s new season kicks off this week. Here’s what you need to know.

It has been a massive few years for Women’s Sport in Australia. 2023 delivered an incredible FIFA Women’s World Cup that saw the Matildas place fourth, the Diamonds netball team won the World Cup after an incredible game against England, the Wallaroos defeated both Fiji and Team USA during the Pacific Four Series – and 2024 brought a very successful Olympics campaign.

As more and more Aussie women’s teams are (finally) getting the recognition they deserve, Seven has announced the upcoming AFLW season will have a home on Seven and 7plus

Founded in 2016, the AFL Women’s is Australia’s national semi-professional Australian Rules Football League for female players. The first season began in February 2017 and comprised of eight teams. The league has been a major success and expanded to ten teams in 2019. Now, the 2024 season is set to kick off with an incredible 18 teams in the competition.

Where to watch the AFLW

Throughout the 2024 AFLW season, fans can stream the weekly matches live and on-demand on Seven Plus. 

Fans in NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia can also watch every game involving teams from their home states live and free on Seven and 7plus across every round of the season.

AFLW Best and Fairest Award winner and South Australian women’s football icon, Erin Phillips, will join Seven’s AFLW team for the 2024 season following her first full season behind the mic for Seven’s men’s AFL coverage. it, Seven will also welcome back a star-studded lineup of the game’s best callers and experts, including Jason Bennett, Libby Birch, Nigel Carmody, Natalie Edwards, Melissa Hickey, Abbey Holmes, Sam Lane, Kate McCarthy, Alister Nicholson, Sarah Olle and Jo Wotton.

Seven has also launched its brand new weekly AFLW talk show, Talking W, starring host Abbey Holmes and expert panellist Kate McCarthy, alongside a rotating group of current and former players. Every Monday night, Abbey and Kate will be met by a special guest to tackle all the biggest women’s footy headlines dominating the news cycle, while providing expert match analysis from the previous round, live and free on 7plus.

AFLW Prize Money 

In August 2023, the AFL announced they would award equal prize money for the men’s and women’s competitions for the first time ahead of the Women’s season launch. 

A total pool of player prize money for both the men’s and women’s competitions was set at $1.1 million – almost double what was previously on offer to AFLW players.
