When Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club hit shelves in 2020 it was an instant success.
A cosy mystery, lovable characters and unpredictable twists and turns saw it become a beloved best-seller and the beginning of a successful – and highly anticipated – four-book franchise.
While book lovers may still be in the throes of the age-old debate between literary works and their on-screen adaptions, news of a Thursday Murder Club movie sent fans into a frenzy in early 2024.
But what will the film entail? Who will star in it? And will it do justice to the beloved books? Here’s what we know so far…
Are they making The Thursday Murders Club into a movie?
Yes! Back in 2020, author Richard Osman announced that he had sold the rights to his book to the one and only Steven Spielberg.
In April 2024, Deadline reported Netflix would release the film, revealing the highly anticipated adaption would also be directed by Chris Columbus, who has previously worked on Home Alone and Harry Potter.
Who would play Joyce in Thursday Murders Club?
In April 2024, Richard Osman announced three of the four leading cast members on his podcast, The Rest is Entertainment – and fans were delighted to see Helen Mirren, who had been a popular “fan choice” on the call sheet.
“I’m now allowed to officially announce three of the four members of the Thursday Murder Club,” he said.
“Elizabeth is going to be played by the person who people most often shout at me in the street as them wanting them to play Elizabeth… Helen Mirren, which is very exciting.”
The roles of Ron Ritchie and Ibrahim Arif, two more of the four crime-solving pensioners at the Coopers Chase Retirement Village in Kent have also been announced.
“Ibrahim is Sir Ben Kingsley,” Osman shared, adding: “Ron is going to be played by – I’m going to say the most handsome man in the world, so he’s going to have to dull himself down a bit… Pierce Brosnan.”
A few weeks later it was announced that Celia Imrie would be taking n the role of ex-nurse Joyce.
What is the premiere date of The Thursday Murder Club?
At this stage we don’t have any news on a premiere date, but since the film is still in production, we expect it to take quite a while.
In the meantime, you can re-read the first four books (a fifth is slated for release in 2025!).
