What is the Matildas documentary about?
The Matildas doco is “an inspirational and intimate behind-the-scenes story of the CommBank Matildas – Australia’s women’s national football team.”
It follows the stories of players including Sam Kerr, Ellie Carpenter, Mary Fowler, Steph Catley and more in the leadup to the 2023 FIFA WWC.
“It’s been an incredible experience sharing our journeys with Disney+, both on the field and off, and I can’t wait for the world to see our true love, dedication and passion for the game and our country,” Sam Kerr said.
The documentary offers insights to the team, and their Ted Lasso-esque coach, Gustavsson, who has the words “Passion” and “Love” scribbled on a board in one scene.
“I genuinely really believe that this team can create history in so many ways, not just winning football games,” head coach Gustavsson says of his golden girls.
“The way that they can inspire the next generation, how they unite a nation or they can leave a legacy that’s so much bigger than 90 minutes of football.”
The Tillies doco also offers insight to the personal lives of players – marking an important milestone in representation for LGBTQIA+ football fans.
15 years ago, the Never Say Die documentary also followed the women’s team in their lead into the 2007 World Cup. But the doco did not feature any of the relationships of team members, with the exception of one heterosexual relationship.
The 2023 documentary features all types of relationships, with a key focus on Sam Kerr and her partner Kristie Mewis.
There’s even an engagement love story, with Emily Gielnik arriving early to camp in Brisbane to propose to her long-term partner.
“I was actually, funnily enough, sitting next to my wife and we both picked up on how it was really seamlessly integrated into the show as very normal and I think that was the beauty of it,” the former Matilda Sarah Walsh told Optus Sport of the includsiveness of the 2023 documentary.
As TikTok has dubbed the Matildas one of the “gayest team in the world cup,” we’re sure many fans will enjoy seeing the documentary for both it’s professional and personal insights to the players.
