The Kardashians are back. After saying an extremely emotional farewell to their show Keeping Up With The Kardashians in 2021, the famous family returned to our screens with a brand new show on a brand new network in 2022. Poor Ryan Seacrest.
Yes, the famous Kar-Jenner family may have gotten their start on the E! Network in 2007 and built an empire as they filmed 20 seasons, but they revealed they were ready to leave the world of reality TV behind with their last episodes airing in June 2021.
Shortly after announcing their departure, matriarch Kris Jenner confirmed that the family weren’t actually done with reality TV – they were just done with KUWTK.
So, here’s everything you need to know about their very different TV show The Kardashians as they confirm 20 additional episodes of the Hulu reboot. That’s right, we’re no longer “keeping up.”
Why did the family want to stop filming KUWTK?
It’s no secret that family feuds had become a central, often toxic, part of the KUWTK story. Their on-screen fights were legendary.
According to the unofficial head of the family, Kim Kardashian, that’s part of why they wanted to stop the show. In the new series, they instead place a greater focus on the many different businesses the sisters own and, of course, what Momager Kris Jenner is up to.
“It will be a different side,” Kim told The Wall Street Journal in October 2021. “But I wouldn’t say that our silly sides are not going to come out.”
“This is the next chapter,” Kris revealed at Disney’s Upfronts virtual presentation in May 2021. “In the new show, you’ll see us evolving as a family, fans want us to be who we are and since moment one, they’ve been emotionally invested in our show just like we are.”
Of course, the move to Hulu was bigger than just “new themes” and a fresh vibe. In an exclusive cover story with Variety, the famous family put it simply: “money always matters.”
“We give so much of our personal lives up for entertainment,” Khloé told the publication of the reported nine-figure salary they received. “We always have our private family conversations, and we’re pretty brutal, me and my sisters, with what we will settle for or not settle for.”
“Not all money is good money. It has to be a good fit, and Hulu was just the perfect fit for us,” she continued, adding all the family members would be making an equal share.
Momager Kris said: “Well, money always matters. I think that anybody would be foolish to say that money doesn’t matter anymore.”
What can fans expect from The Kardashians?
Unlike the personal storylines of KUWTK – which some of the women had begun to pull away from – many of The Kardashians plotlines focus on family business endeavours.
But it’s not all board meetings and Kylie Cosmetics brand strategy. Kourtney Kardashian and her fiancé Travis Barker filmed their engagement and family celebrations for the show.
Kim’s relationship with Pete Davidson also scored some air time, as well as her divorce from Kanye West.
“Being in the public eye and having disagreements publicly is never easy,” Kim told Variety. “But I do believe in handling it all privately. I believe in championing publicly and criticising privately.
“I don’t think I would ever criticise the father of my children on my TV show. That’s just not really what I’m about, and I just don’t think that would ever make me feel good. I’m always really respectful of what the kids will see.”
As for season five, you can expect to see more fun, more family, and more drama (as always). “From the big screen to baby bliss, the family continues to defy expectations in all their endeavours,” reads the synopsis.
When does The Kardashians air in Australia?
The first episode of season one dropped on April 14, 2022. Much like the original KUWTK, each season of The Kardashians will have new episodes dropping weekly each Thursday.
The first episode broke records on Hulu in the United States, with the streaming service revealing that The Kardashians is its biggest series premiere in history. Since then the show has released five seasons.
So, it is no surprise that they announced The Kardashians would return for 20 more episodes shortly after airing season five. It’s available to watch on Disney+.
Where can you watch The Kardashians in Australia?
The show has been filmed exclusively for Hulu – but thankfully the reality series has been picked up by an alternate streaming service for international release.
