Starring Timothée Chalamet and Hugh Grant as the iconic Willy Wonka and Oompa Loompa, the story of Wonka’s years before he rose to fame as the world’s greatest chocolatier quickly became a must-watch and now, the whimsical world of Wonka is finally coming to streaming!
What is Wonka about?
Wonka follows the ambitious journey of a young Willy Wonka as he ventures to Europe to begin his journey to becoming a world-famous chocolatier.
After being offered a room at a boarding house, Wonka believes that he will soon be able to captivate the town with his culinary creativity, however, his shelter does not come without conditions, leaving Wonka trapped working in a laundrette.
After befriending fellow captive Noodle, Wonka soon learns of the town’s underground chocolate cartel, dominated by his three biggest rival chocolatiers, that hopes to drive Wonka and his newfound business out of town.
From there, the duo enlist the help of their fellow captives to hatch an elaborate plan to free themselves from the laundrette and free the town from chocolate tyranny.
Is the new Wonka movie a musical?
If you love a sing-along, you’ll be excited to know that Wonka is a musical! The story features musical performances by many of the main cast, including Timothée Chalamet and Hugh Grant.
Is Wonka a prequel?
The 2023 Wonka film is a prequel to the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) and the Tim Burton remake Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).
Speaking to the British Film Institute, Wonka director Paul King revealed that the 2023 iteration of Wonka is set 25 years before the events of the original 1971 film.
“I think because we’re 25 years before the ’71 movie, we were going, ‘Well, that takes you into the late 1940s.’ It’s entirely coincidentally the golden age of the Hollywood musical,” Paul said.

For Australian fans, Wonka is currently available to rent or buy on Prime Video and Apple TV+.
However, Wonka will be available to stream in Australia on BINGE from September 13, 2024.
