More than 30 years in the making, the long-awaited sequel to Top Gun now has a trailer – and will be released in cinemas in 2020. Watch the trailer below.

Released in 1986, the original Top Gun gave the world the phrase “I feel the need … the need for speed”, power ballad ‘Take My Breath Away’ by Berlin and that beach volleyball scene. It also made a superstar out of Tom Cruise, who played renegade naval aviator LT Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

Appaearing at Comic-Con in San Diego, Cruise surprised fans by unveiling the trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, saying, “I felt it was my responsibility to deliver for you.”

In the trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise’s character, who is now a flight instructor, is being lectured by a senior navy official, who asks why Maverick has achieved so many things in his career but is still only ranked captain. We see flashes of Maverick’s trademark cockiness as he responds to his superior, played by Ed Harris. He also seems to have lost none of his fondness for leather bomber jackets, Ray-Bans and motorbikes.

Also due to return for the sequel is Val Kilmer, who played Maverick’s rival LT Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, while Miles Teller has been cast as the son of Goose, Anthony Edwards’ character from the first film.

Top Gun: Maverick was originally intended to be released this year, but has been pushed back until next year. It is due to be released in cinemas on June 25, 2020.
