In great news from the streaming world, the best baseball movie of all time is returning to our screens.
Okay, maybe not the best one of all time, but the 1992 classic A League of Their Own has always been up there among the likes of Moneyball and Field of Dreams, and probably ahead of them if you’re a baseball-loving woman.
The film, which told the story of an all-women baseball league set up during World War II has held a special place in our hearts for 30 years now. Inspired by true events, it was the perfect reclamation of any ‘throwing like a girl’ rhetoric.
Here’s everything we know about the film’s remake into a television series.
What do we know about A League of Their Own in 2022?
Pretty much everything we know is from the trailer that Prime Video released just a month before the show arrives.
Their first teaser, set to Stevie Nicks’ iconic tune Edge of Seventeen, showed D’Arcy Carden’s character playing in the famed women’s uniform with the long skirt, while other characters walk out onto the field, slide into bases, practice pitching, and – strangely – howl at the moon.
There looks to be a tiny bit of romantic tension between D’Arcy and Abbi Jacobson’s characters, who are respectively called Greta and Carson. This is unsurprising, as the first details released around the show have hinted that it will take a deeper look at race and sexuality in the same 1940s setting of the original film.
The following trailer showed a closer look at Chanté Adams’ character, Max, who looks to be joining a men’s league when she’s rejected from the All-American League because of her race.
What was the film A League of Their Own about?
Inspired by a true story, the original film followed a group of women who played baseball professionally during World War II. While America was sending soldiers out to fight on their behalf, several major baseball executives started the league in order to maintain the sport.
The film followed a series of fictional women who played as part of the Rockford Peaches, who faced problems very reminiscent of the times. The concept explored the sexism faced by women in the 1940s, who were only allowed to play baseball at a professional level once there were no men to do so.
The film received a strong critical response and had a stellar cast – starring the likes of Tom Hanks, Madonna, Geena Davis and Rosie O’Donnell. Not only was it an empowering film for women, it’s also considered among the best ‘baseball films’ for fans of the sport – which makes the remake all the more exciting.
Who will star in A League of Their Own?
Most would consider Madonna pretty hard to top, but millennial and Gen Z women will probably be pretty thrilled with the new cast, too.
Abbi Jacobson, who is best known for co-creating and starring in the US sitcom Broad City alongside Ilana Glazer, is starring and creating the show. She’s joined by D’Arcy Carden, who played Janet in The Good Place, as well as Nick Offerman, who starred as Ron Swanson in Parks and Recreation, and many, many other films and television shows.
They’re also joined by Chanté Adams as Max, Gbemisola Ikumelo, who plays artist Clance, and Kelly McCormack, who will play Jess, a Canadian shortstop (which is a position in baseball).
