Obi-Wan Kenobi, the much-loved Jedi Master himself, is getting his own series – and all we want to know is why it took so long.

The character was introduced in Episode IV, Star Wars: A New Hope, only to die in the same film.

Princess Leia requests his help via a message found by her long-lost brother, Luke Skywalker, who teams up with Obi-Wan, a former Jedi Knight who reveals that he worked closely with Luke’s father in the Clone Wars, before he was murdered by Darth Vader, Star Wars’ original villain.

While this film sees the end of Obi-Wan, it was really just the beginning, given he would become a major character in the prequels.

Where does Obi Wan-Kenobi fit in the Star Wars chronology?

At the end of Episode III, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, we see Obi-Wan’s apprentice and best friend, Anakin Skywalker, turn to the dark side, becoming Darth Vader.

His twin children, born to Padme, who then dies soon after, are split by Obi-Wan and Yoda, with Leia going to Alderaan to become a princess, and Luke being sent to his step-uncle and aunt. Obi-Wan opts to follow Luke and watch over him from exile until the time is right to challenge the militaristic leadership of the Empire.

And 10 years later is where Obi Wan-Kenobi begins.

Ewan McGregor, who played the younger Obi-Wan, will reprise his role and act as an executive producer on the show.

His age and place in the timeline brings him closer to the original Obi-Wan, played by Alec Guinness in Episode IV.

“We find Obi-Wan at the beginning of our story rather broken, and faithless, and beaten, somewhat given up,” Ewan told Entertainment Weekly.

“There’s a hunger for this character to come back,” he said in a reel for Disney Plus.

“The fans have been waiting long enough.”

Who else will we see in Obi-Wan Kenobi?

The series will also welcome back Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader, and Australian actor Joel Edgerton will return as Owen Lars, Luke’s step-uncle.

Owen’s wife, Beru Whitesun Lars, will be played by another Aussie acting export, Bonnie Piesse.

Moses Ingram, of The Queen’s Gambit fame, will also join as Reva, a new character who makes for a ruthless and ambitious Inquisitor who creators of the show hope will “contribute to the legacy of Star Wars villains in a really interesting way”.

More actors have been cast in roles that are still undisclosed, so we’re excited to see if any younger or older versions of our favourites appear along the way.
