Earlier this year, Karl reflected on the big changes in his life.
“I do not believe for a second I was at my best,” he told Rebecca Maddern at Nine’s post-Logies brunch.
“I think I was struggling towards the end of last year. It wasn’t a great surprise to me - in fact, it was a relief in many ways that I was taken off the Today show, because I just wasn’t at my best. And you can’t be doing that show unless you are at the top of your game.”
The shock decision follows his axing from the TODAY Show back in 2018.
In an official network statement announcing his departure from TODAY on Dec. 19., Karl said: "For the last 14 years I've co-hosted the best show on television. I can't thank Nine enough for the opportunity.
"I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be good enough to host this grand show for so long.
"Thanks to our viewers mostly, you are what matters most. It's been a tough time. Thanks for hanging in there. I look forward to seeing you in another capacity at this great network soon."
