Why mini beauty products are having a big moment

TikTok's love affair with tiny treasures

If you’ve been scrolling through TikTok lately, you’ve probably noticed a new trend that’s making waves in the beauty world: mini makeup bags filled with adorable, travel-size versions of your favourite beauty products. These pint-sized wonders are capturing hearts and vanities alike, proving that good things truly do come in small packages.

Why the fascination? For one, these little beauties combine functionality with fun, but they also provide accessibility to consumers with a lower budget, especially in our economic market. According to Spate’s The New Rules of Beauty report, there has been 29 per cent year-on-year rise in Google searches for mini beauty sets. Unsurprisingly, things have risen even further for fragrance too, with a rise of 109.8 per cent says Mintel’s 2024 The Future of Fragrance report. Proving that discovery sets of our favourite scents are a lot more appealing (and affordable) than just one larger sized bottle.

Mini beauty products also align with a growing trend toward sustainability. Smaller packaging means less waste and a smaller environmental footprint. Many brands are embracing eco-friendly materials and refillable options for their mini products too, making them a win-win for both beauty lovers and the planet.

As a B-Corp-certified beauty brand, Sunday Riley takes sustainability (and minis) very seriously. They have an ongoing partnership with CleanHub and Green Worms, a trusted and transparent global organisation that prevents plastic waste from reaching the ocean. Their oils are also produced using a Zero Waste Oil Process, which means that even if only 10% of the seeds used for their oil products are needed, the remaining 90% are used in various nutritional supplements and plant protein forms for animal and pet use.

Minis aren’t just easy to travel with either; they’re also the ultimate way to try new products without committing to a full-sized version. “You can now buy our award-winning skincare as our stackable minis,” says Trinny Woodall, founder of beauty brand Trinny London. “You can buy them individually, but this allows you to start a fantastic skincare routine at a really great entry-level,” she adds. Think of it like dating – before you decide if you’re ready for a full-blown commitment you get all the fun of experimenting without the risk of ending up with a shelf full of “meh.”

So next time you’re browsing the beauty aisle or packing for a trip, grab a few of these little gems.
