Truth: we can always count on Olivia Culpo to provide us with ample hair inspiration, from waves to up-dos to braids and more. But yes, just like the rest of us, the 24-year-old model and former Miss Universe suffers from her fair share of bad hair days, too. So when Culpo, who is the new ambassador of GHD hair products, sat down with PeopleStyle for our 5 Questions video series, we had to ask her if she’s ever had a traumatizing hair experience.

The answer was a resounding yes!

“I was living with my sister in L.A., and it was a really awful time for me,” the star said. “I found this hair dryer underneath the sink – I didn’t realize it had completely broken for some reason. I literally burned off a whole section of my hair!”

Culpo knew the situation was dire after she showed a fresh bald spot to her sister after using it. “A whole chunk of my hair, like, this thick but this long came out of my hair,” she said. “And I just looked at my sister and I started to cry. Her face turned bright red.”

The lesson? “Don’t ever use a hair dryer that you don’t know works, ladies and gentlemen!”

The star also looked back on her year of memorable red carpet looks, and revealed the pop culture inspiration behind her favorite gown of 2016.

“One of my favorite looks was this beautiful Galvan [London] mustard-colored dress,” she said. “I was wearing this gorgeous berry lip and my hair was sleek back, something I haven’t done in a really long time,” Culpo said. To achieve her slicked back hairstyle, Culpo’s team used a GHD flat iron “to get a nice bend at the end of the hair.”

“You know who else I was inspired by with this look? Kate Hudson in How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days. When I tried on this yellow dress I was like, ‘Oh my god! I feel like I could be with Matthew McConaughey on the cover!”

Although to us, Culpo looks like a master at posing on the red carpet, she has a little secret. “I actually still don’t know what my good side is!” the model laughed. Instead of sticking to one particular part, pose or style, Culpo chooses to switch things up every time she does a look.

“This morning I was talking to the hairdresser trying to figure out what side to put this braid on,” she said. “I haven’t really found one particular pose I like or more or half of the face I like more. You guys, can you help me figure out what is my good side? ‘Cause I don’t know!”
