I recently visited Orange, one of Australia’s most famous and equally stunning wine regions, for the very first time. As shocking as that may seem (because anyone who has ever met me knows I bloody love a wine!), it was never something that really interested me… until I went.
As a Brit, currently residing in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs—yes, I am the cliché—I didn’t register just how close Orange is either. A short three-and-a-half-hour drive makes it one of the best weekend destinations for those who crave a little slice of country life but are time-poor like myself.
As a first-timer, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but from friends’ stories and experiences of the beautiful rolling hills (set a huge 900 meters above sea level, by the way), amazing restaurants and bars, as well as a never-ending selection of Instagram-worthy vineyards, I knew I wanted to experience this with my partner. A little romantic spring getaway for two, staring into each other’s eyes over a world-famous bottle of Pinot, yes, please.
When Rowlee Wines reached out to promote their brand-new dining room and bar, set on their stunning vineyard spread across eight hectares in ancient volcanic soils on the foothills of Mount Canobolas, I accepted an invitation without hesitation. I knew my manifestation skills were good, but not that good.
If you too are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and have one weekend dedicated to de-stressing, re-grounding, and reconnecting, keep reading because I think Orange might just have it all.
Where to stay in Orange
When I heard that Rowlee Wines had a renovated boutique cottage on their grounds for guests, I squealed with excitement. Their ‘Ultimate Food and Wine Lovers Escape’ is a couple’s dream with absolutely everything taken care of.
Their two-night package includes exclusive access to their cottage, perfectly tucked down a private-access lane and renovated to farmhouse perfection with plush furnishings and a large sweeping balcony overlooking the manicured lawns.
Other great features of the stay included a wine tasting at their sun-drenched cellar door, followed by a delicious three-course set menu dinner—with matched wines, of course—inside their plush new restaurant. Having such a short (slightly tipsy) walk back to the accommodation was greatly appreciated with a very full belly, after what I can only describe as one of the best meals of my life.
Where to eat in Orange
In Orange, local restaurants offer a variety of gourmet experiences that perfectly complement the wine. From farm-to-table feasts to intimate dinners in quaint bistros, each meal felt like an extension of the region’s hospitality.
Rowlee Dining and Bar—I know I said above that this was some of the best food I’ve ever eaten, but I’m not exaggerating. Big, big call, I know, but the communal share-style dishes, delicious drinks, generous hospitality, amazing views, and cosy corners really set this place apart. You can enjoy slow, leisurely hours under the sun, long lunches, and delicious three-course dinners. The dining room and bar are open for lunch Thursday–Sunday and dinner Friday–Saturday.
Hey Rosey– what I’d describe as a hole-in-the-wall dining experience, I loved the look of this place. With only one chef, one bartender, and one waitress, it feels like you’re sitting in their dining room.
Byng Street Café—the coolest spot in town for breakfast was raved about by every person I asked for café recommendations. The atmosphere was upbeat, lots of seating options inside and out, friendly service, Instagram-worthy and equally tasty dishes, as well as coffee that came out in four-seconds-flat! I swear.
Romantic walks and hikes
If you’re anything like me and love to unwind and reground by going on a long walk, you’re spoiled for choice in Orange. Just a 10-minute drive from Rowlee Wines is the town itself, which is charming and brimming with character and absolutely walkable.
The local farmers’ markets are a delightful way to sample fresh produce and artisanal goods too, and the nearby Mount Canobolas is great for a more traditional hike that’s not too strenuous, with panoramic views of the region.
Vineyards to visit in Orange
I was so surprised when I found out that Orange has 80 vineyards and nearly 40 cellar doors in total, but let me tell you, every single one of them is as beautiful as the other!
On day two of our Orange adventure, my partner and I decided to do a self-guided wine tour to suss some of the finest destinations around us. It’s a hard job, but someone had to do it.
If you have limited time, I’d recommend sticking to a 15-minute radius to fit in at least four vineyards without the need to rush. Oh, and just FYI, Ubers operate here, they might just take a little longer to arrive than you’re used to.
Here are some of the best that were close to us that I urge you to check out on your next visit:
- Borrodell Estate: The best views of the whole of Orange are here, and you can also stay in their boutique accommodation on the property.
- Heifer Station: The Loft House cottage on this sprawling vineyard is like stepping back in time. The cellar door is also very family friendly, and they even have farm animals to pat too! Great for all the family if you’re just stopping by.
- Logan Wines: Although you can’t stay on this beautiful property, Logan was just awarded the best new Pinot Gris worldwide, so worth the drive to give it a sample.
