While Foxtel’s hit series, Mr Inbetween, has come to an end, it seems fans are refusing to accept that there’ll be no more episodes telling the story of hitman Ray Shoesmith.

Mr Inbetween‘s third season aired earlier this year and came to an end in July with episode nine of the series, I’m Not Leaving.

Lead actor, Scott Ryan, who also worked as a writer on the show, is adamant that three seasons were enough, and that he would have no further involvement.

“It feels so good. I have had enough of him,” Scott told MediaWeek earlier this year, referencing Ray.

Mr Inbetween followed the exploits of Ray, a hitman for hire who lived a double life.

First airing with Showcase in Australia in 2018, the show was renewed for a second series with Foxtel, which lead to international viewership and a cult following.

Although a fairly recent show, the character of Ray Shoesmith has existed in Scott’s mind as a writer since the late 1980s, which further encouraged him to put his character to bed.

“After season two I kind of thought well, you know, it is probably time to wrap it up now,” he admitted to MediaWeek.

However, he is very aware of, and stoked about, the success of the show.

“The show has done really, really well for an Australian TV show, and to be picked up by a US network the way it was, so it definitely has been a very fruitful experience,” he admitted.

Although Scott is content to end the series at three seasons, many fans have been disappointed by the decision.

Some have gone as far as launching a petition, asking for Scott and director Nash Edgerton to give them more content.

“The final episode did not close the book, and the adventures of Ray Shoesmith are incomplete,” the organiser of the petition wrote.

“We ask that they continue writing for a fourth season, and beyond… To rip him away from the people who gave him life, the fans, is unfair and unreasonable.”

But Scott seems to be looking ahead to new things.

“I’m still getting better as a writer and as an actor. This was my first professional gig, but I feel like I haven’t hit my stride yet,” the 50-year-old told news.com.au.

“There’s half a dozen things I want to do … the best is down the road and that’s exciting,” he said.

Despite this, he couldn’t help but make us wonder if there will be more of Ray Shoesmith in the future.

“Who knows mate, Ray Shoesmith could pop up anywhere so people should best be careful I guess.”
