Olivia Wilde has called the moment she was served custody papers while in front of a live audience an “attack”.

Speaking to Variety the Don’t Worry Darling director opened up about the awkward moment suggesting that it had to have been planned.

Olivia was giving a presentation at CinemaCon when she was awkwardly handed the papers on behalf of her former fiance Jason Sudeikis.

Initially Olivia thought the envelope, marked ‘Private and Confidential’, contained a script and opened it in front of the 4,100 strong audience.

When realising what it was she uncomfortably said, “Oh, ok, got it,” before launching back into her presentation.

Now Olivia has said the incident must have “required forethought”.

“It was really upsetting. It shouldn’t have been able to happen. There was a huge breach in security, which is really scary,” she said.

“The hurdles that you had to jump through to get into that room with several badges, plus special COVID tests that had to be taken days in advance, which gave you wristbands that were necessary to gain access to the event — this was something that required forethought.”

Olivia also suggested the entire event was typical of their relationship.

“Sadly, it was not something that was entirely surprising to me. I mean, there’s a reason I left that relationship.”

At the time neither Olivia or Jason publicly addressed the incident but court documents show Olivia was extremely upset by the “outrageous” move.

“Jason’s actions were clearly intended to threaten me and catch me off guard. He could have served me discreetly, but instead he chose to serve me in the most aggressive manner possible,” Olivia said in the document.

“The fact that Jason would embarrass me professionally and put our personal conflict on public display in this manner is extremely contrary to our children’s best interests.”

The move appears to have inflamed their bitter custody battle over their two children Otis, 8, and Daisy, 5.

Olivia and Jason split in late 2020, and originally agreed to share custody of the children while both parents split their time between New York, Los Angeles, and London.

This agreement fell apart earlier this year when the former couple had a disagreement about where to raise the children permanently.

Jason had been seeking to raise the kids primarily in New York where he plans to live now that filming on Ted Lasso has wrapped up.

However, since January 2021 Olivia has split her time between Los Angeles and her partner Harry Styles’ home in London. In the documents she argues the children have spent the last four years living in either of the two cities.

Jason claims he initially wanted to settle the dispute out of court but Olivia hinted she would restrict his access to the kids if he didn’t relocate to L.A.

“First, Olivia said that if I did not reside full-time in Los Angeles, she would allow me to spend time with Otis and Daisy [only] on weekends and during vacation periods – thus depriving me of my right to parent the children during important periods of their lives,” Jason said in the court documents.

“Second, Olivia said that she intended to relocate with the children to London following the close of school in 2023.”

He went on to say Olivia was never meant to be served in such a public manner and it was a series of logistical mishaps that caused it to happen.

He also explained why he chose not to serve the papers to Olivia at Harry’s home where she had been living.

“I did not want service to take place at the home of Olivia’s current partner because Otis and Daisy might be present,” he wrote.

Earlier this month a judge agreed with Olivia ruling that California is the children’s home state.

“New York was not the home state of the subject children; but rather California was the children’s home state…This court finds that New York does not have jurisdiction to hear the custody petitions as New York is not the home state of the subject children,” the ruling reads.
