Back in high school, when someone asked you who your best friend was, did you immediately begin to rattle off every single person you crossed paths with, or did you just say one strategically chosen name to appease the person asking?
Well, the latter is exactly what Selena Gomez did, and it’s previously landed her in hot water with friend Francia Raisa.
In a previous profile with Rolling Stone promoting her highly anticipated documentary My Mind And Me, this one blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in the story has caused major bad blood between Gomez and one of her oldest friends.
“I never fit in with a cool group of girls that were celebrities. My only friend in the industry really is Taylor [Swift], so I remember feeling like I didn’t belong. I felt the presence of everyone around me living full lives. I had this position, and I was really happy, but … was I?” she revealed to the publication.
While being excluded as an “industry friend” may be water off a duck’s back for some people, for Francia it was enough to get vocal about it on social media.
Back in 2017 Raisa, who is an actor and in the “industry”, donated her kidney to Selena in what the Rare Beauty founder considered a ‘life-saving’ transplant.
So to be snubbed like this in such a public capacity is surely enough to stir up some beef between the pair.
To make matters worse, the only time that Francia appeared in the documentary was when Selena referred to her as “that girl who donated me a kidney”. Yikes.

What happened between Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa?
Following the publishing of Rolling Stone’s article, E! shared a snippet of the story where Selena referred to Taylor Swift as her only friend in the industry.
While we’re not sure if Selena was referring to the music industry specifically or the entertainment industry as a whole, the post was enough to warrant a response from Francia. Throwing the subtlest amount of shade, Francia simply commented “Interesting”.
Immediately after noticing the comment, fans were quick to pick up on the fact that Francia no longer followed Selena on Instagram, although Selena did still follow Francia.
Later, a fan took to TikTok to defend Selena’s comments, but the musician took it one step further by commenting “sorry I didn’t mention every person that I know.”
Are Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa still friends?
Despite the ongoing speculation surrounding their feud, both Francia and Selena have since spoken publicly about their relationship; confirming that there are no hard feelings between the famous friends.
“No beef, just salsa,” Francia captioned a recent Instagram story of herself and Selena in matching leopard print heels.
Francia’s short and sweet response was shared just over three weeks after Selena took to Instagram to celebrate her birthday.
“Happiest of birthdays to this special human being. No matter where life takes us, I love you,” Selena wrote alongside a carousel of heartwarming photos of the duo.
The birthday tribute by Selena also coincided with Francia re-following Selena on Instagram, with many fans now believing that any animosity between the two friends has officially been put to rest.
Speaking to OK! in October 2023, Francia revealed more behind-the-scenes details of their alleged feud, telling the publication, “I was really surprised when she posted me on her birthday this past year and I was like, ‘She’s trying.’ I never wanted to talk about our friendship, and I would always say, ‘There’s no beef!’.”
Francia also revealed that following Selena’s initial comment, the pair did not speak to each other for a year. The famous friends eventually reunited for dinner shortly after their birthdays to rekindle their friendship.
“Do I have a guard up? Absolutely… I’m sure she has her guard up with me too. At that dinner I was like, ‘You just turned 31, and things will change.’ I am the 35-year-old version of me, and you don’t know me anymore because we hadn’t really hung out since I was 29, so I was like, ‘We’re going to start to get to know each other again,’ Francia told the publication.
“It’s like with sisters. You guys fight and the next day, you’re fine. At the end of the day, we’re family and there’s this unconditional love and trust there. We still have to build a real friendship again, but the love is there.”
