What happened in season three?
We were left hanging at the end of season three, when our hearts were freshly broken by Maeve's (Emma Mackey) decision to go to the US on a scholarship rather than continue her schooling in the UK, where Otis (Asa Butterfield) is.
Their will-they-won't-they love story has been drawn out since the first few episodes of the show, and while it finally seemed like they were going to make it work, we were disappointed once more.
As well as Otis and Maeve's disappointing split, we also saw the closure of Moordale, the school all our favourite characters attend.
This means that inevitably, a lot of characters will disappear into the ether as they 'attend different schools', or rather, take on different Netflix projects.
We also saw Otis's mother, Jean, give birth to a daughter, while his best friend, Eric, broke things off with boyfriend Adam.
There's a lot of ends that need tying off!
What will happen in season four?
Netflix has released an official synopsis for the upcoming season:
"Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier — their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, while Eric is praying they won’t be losers again.
But Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students — they thought they were progressive but this new college is another level. There’s daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe and a group of kids who are popular for being … kind?!
Viv is totally thrown by the college’s student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A Level and Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him.
Over in the U.S., Maeve is living her dream at prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her, while adjusting to not being an only child at home, or the only therapist on campus."
Who is returning for season four?
Asa Butterfield will be back as Otis, while Gillian Anderson will return in her role as Jean. We had our worries about Ncuti Gawta, who was recently announced as the new Doctor Who lead, but he has also been confirmed to return as Eric.
While Maeve did race off to America last season, we've had it confirmed that Emma Mackey will be back in her role. She's currently filming Barbie alongside her doppelgänger Margot Robbie, but thankfully the scheduling aligned to have her return for the show.
Connor Swindles and Aimee Lou Wood will be back as Adam Groff and Aimee Giffs, and Kedar Williams-Stirling will return as Jackson. We'll also see Dua Saleh return as non-binary character Cal, whom Jackson had a strong romantic interest in last season.
Also, American actor and producer, Dan Levy, will be joining the show as Thomas Molloy, an American author who is also Maeve's professor. Dan was the brains behind Schitt's Creek, and also starred in the role of David Rose - a cultural icon of our time.
Who won't be back?
With the closure of Moordale, the show will easily write off a couple of characters, but it doesn't mean they won't be missed!
On-screen lovers Ola Nyman and Lily Iglehart (played by Patricia Allison and and Tanya Reynolds) have both decided to not return for the new season, but both expressed how much they loved working on the show.
Simone Asley will also not be returning as Olivia Hanan, given she now stars as Lady Kate Sharma in another Netflix hit, Bridgerton.
"I think my time on [the show] has come to an end," she told Glamour. "It's very sad because I love them all so much."
