The first Monday of May may be another ordinary workday for most of us, but for Doja Cat, it was an opportunity to serve one of the 2024 Met Gala’s most standout looks.

On a red carpet dominated by florals, vines, and structured headpieces, the 28-year-old singer stepped out in a floor-length white t-shirt with a wet look illusion. Complimenting her saturated gown with mascara-stained cheeks, Doja’s look quickly raised eyebrows among Met Gala fans, with many criticising the look for being too far removed from the theme.

While her wet t-shirt look may have stood out amongst the crowd, Doja revealed the poignant inspiration behind her style choice, telling Entertainment Tonight, “I know that people are going to do flowers, but my flower of choice is the most used flower – it’s cotton.”

Expanding on the symbolism behind her look, Doja added, “I wanted to do a white t-shirt because a white t-shirt is timeless, and it felt very poetic to choose this.”

“I knew I wasn’t going to blend in too much, but I don’t really like to blend in, so we went with this.”

Posing alongside Guram Gvasalia, Creative Director of Vetements, Doja’s perfect transparent Vetements gown appeared as if it had been just pulled out of a bucket of water and after teasing the illusion, the singer revealed that the secret to her illusion was a generous layer of hair gel.

Earlier that morning, Doja seemingly dropped a teaser for her Met Gala look, sharing photographs to her Instagram of a series of transparent outfit looks in the lead-up to the annual Costume Institute fundraiser.

While some fans criticised her see-through style, Doja explained her avant-garde inspiration on the red-carpet, telling Entertainment Tonight, “I’m performing. It’s a show tonight.”
