It’s been eight years since Miley Cyrus rocked a blonde wig, an alter ego and a double life. And while we miss Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana way more than we’d like to admit, we finally have some closure on why the show came to an end.
Appearing as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race this week, the ‘Nothing Breaks Like a Heart’ singer had the contestants lip syncing Montana’s hit tune, “Best of Both Worlds.” But before the drag queens took to the stage to battle it out, the show’s host asked the singer what we’ve all been wondering for years: “Hey, whatever happened to her?”
“A lot of drugs,” the 26-year-old pop star joked.
Okay… I mean, most of us were thinking she might’ve grown up or become a recluse, but whatever you say, Miles.
Although Montana might not have turned to illegal substances, Cyrus has been pretty open about experimenting with drugs, admitting that there was a period in her life where she relied on marijuana, which she dubs as “the best drug on earth.”
Back in 2017, Cyrus joined James Corden for an episode of Carpool Karaoke. But before belting out some of her hit tunes, the star opened up about experimenting with drugs over the years, admitting she smokes “a lot” of weed. She even said that while filming the ‘Wrecking Ball’ music video, she was “high as hell!” Later that year, the singer joined Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show and admitted that she had been high during every performance on the series.
“I’ve always been very stoned on your shows,” she told Fallon. “I don’t know if you know this, everybody,” she said. “‘Remember the last time I was here? I was dressed as a bunny rabbit and then like a cat. There’s a reason for that: I was high.”
Despite dabbling in the substance, the 26-year-old told Billboard in 2017 that she decided to quit smoking weed, admitting she needed to start fresh.
“I like to surround myself with people that make me want to get better, more evolved, open. And I was noticing, it’s not the people that are stoned. I want to be super clear and sharp, because I know exactly where I want to be.”
After taking a lengthy hiatus, Cyrus revealed that her mum Tish— who “smokes a lot of weed”— was responsible for the reintroduction.
“My mom got me back on it,” she said in an interview with The Sun in December. “When I’m just working, I don’t think I function at my highest, most intelligent, most being-able-to-be-as-aware-and- as-present, so I don’t smoke when I work.”
According to Cyrus, her mum even threatened to quit as her manager to start growing pot!
“My dad’s got a farm and she’s like ‘I’m just going to quit everything and grow.’ She’s my manager. So if my mom quits everything, that’s quitting me to go home and, like, grow weed,” she said, admitting she laughed off the idea. “Which doesn’t sound like the best idea. … My mom could barely keep us alive. She’s not going to grow pot.”
Whatever floats your boat!
