In a saturated world of sparkly jewels whether they be costume jewellery under $10 or something a little more luxurious, finding something truly personal and unique to you is hard to find unless it’s an engagement, ceremonial ring or a gift.

However, the demand for ‘forever pieces’ that stand the test of time has never been higher not only from an economic standpoint but more so from a want for something that reflects your personality and style.

This tailor-made, intimate and collaborative approach instantly makes it feel special and is changing the way people are shopping in 2024 as it filters into other categories like tailoring, shoes and handbags.

WHO’s Fashion Editor, Aimee sat down with jewellery designer and founder of Argent Silversmith, Elizabeth Herman to chat all things semi-custom jewellery, trends, recycling programs and more sustainable choices.

How has the popularity of bespoke pieces impacted your business?

“We really noticed the resurgence semi-custom pieces when we first launched our birthstone collection.

Since then, our customer feedback has been positive and express their love of the full customisation process we offer. From the setting style, number and size of the gemstone, to the metal finish and addition of engraving or stamping makes it even more special.”

Other than customer requests, what inspires your designs?

“I just love how intrinsically beautiful metal can be in all its forms. Working with this medium, watching it shift and change with forming, pressure, heat and texture is what inspires me. Sometimes I sketch up a design or I’ll play with metals and gemstones on my bench and by accident it can end up being a favourite design. “

What are some trends you’re noticing in the jewellery space right now?

“Our customers and followers are really loving the starry night designs:  gemstones, diamonds or birthstones scattered across the surface of a ring or pendant with a mix of 4- or 8-point star settings and engravings. Thick bezel settings and flush settings are also very in now especially for larger faceted gemstones.”

What are your key sustainable practices?

“We use recycled sterling silver & solid gold often because of our recycling programme (through which customers can send us their broken & unwed jewellery in exchange for a credit) as well as using ethically sourced precious gemstones & conflict-free diamonds. “
